The only real worries about taking multiple weapon paths are:
1) More materials farming

With 2 weapons it's pretty much no extra effort (as long as they don't share a rare monster carve).
My primary weapon is the GS, my secondary the hammer.

I'ts good to have another weapon class you're good with since it gives you some flexibility and variety.
Beating Barroth the first time with a Ludroth Splashhammer was a piece of cake, while using my GS was a bit of a challenge (after some runs it got better)

2) Possible need for armor sets with skills suited to different weapons

Most of the weapon specific skills on armor are later on in the game and I'm planning on getting most of them anyway (yes I'm a collector).
But well, it still might be some extra effort later on.

3) Splitting your personal skill development. You'll get very talented at using a particular weapon if you use it and nothing else.

That is true.
I would stick to one or two weapons at the beginning, as bosses later on will require perfect handling of your weapon.

You can become an allrounder after you beat most of the game.

I've heard Barroth is a lot easier if you know how to use hammers nad now I'm trying to get the best one possible but I need 3 bits of malichite ore
Ok I thought that easy *30 mins later* and I've given up as I haven't mined a SINGLE PIECE, whats with that?

Yeah Malachite can be quite rare.
A run thorugh the Moga forests gives me 2-4 pieces normally.
Mostly the spot at area 12 and the underwater spot in area 10.

Also the 2 star quest with the crystal bones is quite good.
You'll probably finde some pieces while mining and the quest reward yields another two pieces.

Man this game looks pretty on an LCD monitor. Now that I can actually see my health bar I'm making way more dumb mistakes... Ah well, farming up the materials for spear and town upgrades is the big issue now that I've hit 3* quests.

Looking forward to making the Q-word-bird-thing armor, since it has evasion up on it, maybe abusing longswords eventually.

Ah, to be in the early game! Grinding, high damage monsters, poor range...

I'm pretty much done with singleplayer mode.
Right now I'm just farming all the fancy armor sets and some of the weapons I like.

So anyone would like to play with a online beginner at the weekend?

I just finished getting the Aqua Spear (or whatever it's called in this game) and the Queropeco armor, so I'm pretty much set to go online. Finally got enough points to upgrade stuff and send people on regular trips, so everything seems to be going well (although I'm think I want to upgrade the spear again...)

What times do you typically play at, Mindmaker?

Depends.
I have holidays so I basically could play at any time I want.

But as I have some work to do and classes to attend, I would rather prefer the evening.
I'm in a GMT+2 timezone.

What about you?

Edit: Oh, I just noticed that you are from Canada, so playing together is impossible, due to seperate servers :/

I really wish there was some way to set up a poll to see what kind of weapons people are using (GS, SnS etc). I'd love to find out which are the most/least common but I don't spend much time at all playing with random people.

Maybe someone who does could give their impressions?

Whee..!
Anyway, I've recently gotten Monster Hunter Tri.
And after getting all the Ludroth Gear.. [For my Bowgun Set.]
I'm working on getting the full Jaggi set now! How does one get the "Royal Frill" or something similar to it?

And I plan on using the Jaggi set with my Sword and Shield. [Ludroth's nail. :D]
And yeah, that's about it, unless I'm doing something drastically incorrect and you feel like correcting me?
