To be fair, most of the weapons and armour are utterly ridiculous.

Those videos are the game before the game we're talking about.

And those problems don't come up ALL the time. Hell, they don't come up most of the fuck Plesioth and apceros *ahem* time.

EDIT:  Third time in a row I've lost to something that wasn't a wyvern during a wyvern hunt.  It's a shame this game is so fun, because it's terrible.  Seriously.  This is one of the worst, most poorly-designed games I've ever played, and I can't put it down.

Because you love the high you get for finally being able to carve that bastard up for all the wrong done to you as it defends itself from you, the hunter who is voluntarily here, trying to kill said bastard for its parts.

Also, valid bullfango.  Now we need 10 epic reasons for 'you' to play Monster Hunter...
In Capcom's defense,  they have lightened down or fixed some of that bullfango in the later games.

Swearing within
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The Rathalos on its own isn't that bad, just obscenely big. It's more annoying when the monster is tiny, like the special Kut-kus...

How much damage do large bombs do?  Is it enough to justify using them over a string of melee attacks?

They do quite a bit of damage, and a sleeping monster takes triple damage from whatever wakes it up.
Since it's G-rank, it's pretty much too dangerous to do a long string of melee attacks, so bombing is preferable to attacking head on when possible, especially when the monster is sleeping. But I still mostly melee, and bomb only after a knockout.

See: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QISevToGuF0 for reference (Spoilers: G rank monster you probably haven't seen yet).

well it is early to say, but the bowgun is kind of hard to use with the classic controler that came with the game, not nearly as smooth as the xbox 360 nor the ps3. I hope I can grow into it. If not, I like the SnS, but looks like it is a light damage weapon and I may run into problems with the kill timer given that I am a newb.

How terrible are the underwater controls with the classic controller? The wiimote+nunchuck are pretty terrible at it. Aside from that the only annoyance i've found is you need to have the wiimote angled the right way to do certain attacks.

yeah it is not that bad with the classic, I think the game would be impossible to play any other way, I hate the wii remote

really the classic is not so bad with the bowgun now that I am more used to it, and fighting bigger hitbox monsters helps

I just got this game and it's one of the few titles on the Wii that I feel the urge to play a lot. I've only logged a couple of hours on it though. That being said, I have to agree that the outfits are among the most ridiculous I've ever seen. At least the unarmored male one is. It's like they took that old Saturday Night Live character Mango and gave him a giant ass sword.

The big swords aren't so much of an issue for me--they're very slow and it feels like your character really struggles with them.

Good game, if you can get past being the most faaaaabulouuuuus monster hunter out there, or can quickly get yourself into a suit of chainmail.

A lot of the scale mail in MH1 looks pretty normal, at least compared to stuff like WoW and Warhams 40k, although the swords are ridiculous.  The serpentblade looks like a big blue snake, and the cutting edge is a row of velocidrome claws that extend by like a foot when you draw it.  I'm working on getting Redwing so I don't have to look at it anymore.

No sword you find or use will be as absurd as the GS you get from killing MHFU's superfinal boss.

Hmm seems like it takes a bit longer to get off the ground initially in MH3 than in the freedom/unite ones but regardless still enjoying it. I'm just wondering then the longswords will become available. Also I freaking hate the kelbi horn missions in any version, I seriously came close to timing out because it just wouldn't give me that final one.

This game could really do with less stupid animations that disrupt your actions.  I've come to terms with the quaffing animation, it makes sense.  The "Monster spotted me, better crouch and look around" animation has ruined many surprise attacks, and has even gotten me killed a few times.  Another bad one is the airblast.  I know the monsters are big and have huge wings and stuff, but it's really irritating and makes it impossible to utilize the monster's most vulnerable moment, and isn't asymmetrical fighting all about exploiting weaknesses?
