From what I hear, MH3 turned lances into an overpowered piece of crap, and I dislike the fact that they can't roll anyway.

I'm pretty sure they had the highest damage output in MH1, but I'm not so sure that's true anymore. Greatswords, however, got a huge buff since then, and I've heard that same terminology applied to them. :P
In MH1, lances were popular because they were strong. In MH3, greatswords are strong because they were popular.

I agree on the not rolling part though.

So Switch-Axes aren't actually that popular? Color me surprised, here I thought they were really prevalent. I see a lot of sword/board and greatswords on the internet, but I've not played much online.

Also, what's better for the axes- Power/elements or status phials? I've the switch-axe that dishes out paralysis right now, but it seems to do so very infrequently.

When you start upgrading it it'll start doing it more and more. Course if your using a weapon just for paralysis then it might be better to go for SnS because of how many shots you can get off quickly = more chances to induce. Then again I didn't use axes alot so I'm not to sure how they compare personally.

I work with the GS, when I first started playing and you start out with your generic iron GS, I didn't like it, but after i played with it awhile, I've learned to love it. I'm second best with a switchaxe, but I only use it in certain situations, and to keep my skills intact. I've managed to forage an ancient blade, and boy do I love it.

Man, now I really want to play again!

We should try to organize some groups.

SnS yeah!
Still, its sad that three HR ~6 hunters can't take down a Barroth.
We had a GS (Rugged GreatSword, or Chieftains GreatSword, they look the same), a Long Sword (one of the ones that paralyzes, or maybe it was thunder), and an SnS (Me, with the royal claw). Seriously, it's sad because I've gotten farther on killing it offline with Cha-Cha.
Damn Barroths loooove Cha-Cha.

But I did get some badass dodges in there, so I guess that counts for something.

If you're having trouble dealing enough damage to beat something, I'd like to pitch the effectiveness of putting monsters to sleep and then planting large barrel bombs on them. I think there's some kind of damage multiplier on the first hit they take while asleep. I use the sleep SnS and detonate using thrown stones offline, but online it might be easier to find a gunner to help with both parts.

YMMV online though, since I don't play with random people. I imagine everyone needs to be on the same page to pull it off.

I didn't have much trouble with Barroth offline (SnS and no chacha), but that's probably just because I'm awesome. Remember that the mud globs are blockable!

Not being able to roll with lance is fine, because of how their hop works. Being able to hop three times, the speed of the hop, and the range of the lance makes it pretty easy to stay on top of the enemy, and having a counter makes it even more so. With Evade gear, you're pretty much and untouchable stabby machine.

I haven't been messing with Tri much lately though, still holding out for English Portable 3rd.

Apparently, gunlances are overpowered as hell in P3, which is a bit of a bummer since they were the main thing I used in Freedom Unite.

I haven't tried lance recently with my Barioth set, but I do know that I'm still pretty bad at lance. Only because the monsters keep going away and I keep forgetting to play conservatively with counter. (It's a three hit combo! SURELY I CAN GET IN THAT LAST ONE! Gets me every time.)

However, recently, I've gotten into SnS. Now, I have massive stores of resources and money at my disposal, so I've gotten pretty much a SnS for every element as well as sleep and poison SnS's. Quite frankly, I didn't expect to enjoy it this much, but it probably out-damages my GS's, except on certain monsters. Plus, I'm using less healing items than ever, simply because I can attack constantly without being smited for impatience. Although... now I DO have the option of getting critical draw(+5 charm and Diablos Vambraces), which would help a lot once I get my High Sieglinde.

I've been trying to get good at a lance, though, because lances are supposedly some of the highest-damaging weapons, but it gets frustrating in online when every other monster charges at a teammate who ran off to heal/carve/do whatever activity that's far away and you're left behind in the dust, either slowly sheathing your weapon or dashing towards the monster, accidentally knocking over an fellow hunter. I suppose it would be easier with a team of lances, all sittin' round the monster so it won't go anywhere far and pokin' it with pointy sticks.

If I do get a bowgun, I'm probably going to end up starting a whole new character just for the bowgun because I don't want to have to deal with the inventory complicating hassle that it presents to my already clogged inventory/equipment box thing. I'd be gathering a whole 'nother set of charms and I already have way too many, in addition to more sets of armor, of which I also have too many.

Autoblock is the best thing ever. You have no idea how many times it has saved my life with the SnS.
Going to go try the Barroth for a bit.

It's not like I rely on it or anything. I'm actually pretty good at dodging. I keep it there for the times that I just can't get out of the way in time. I don't have any other charms either, so am I just going to not use it if it's the only one I have?

Ok, I'll try to get those done.

Also, what's the hate on using the Wiimote with this game?
I'm doing just fine with it, and it makes underwater fighting soooo much easier, because you don't need three hands to move the camera.

Nobody I know ever even tried the auto-block skill. Just from the description it sounded like bad news.

As for the controller, I'm a purist in that regard. I figure if you're not using a control stick to attack, you're not actually playing Monster Hunter. :P

I can get on in 30 or so minutes.
I plan to hunt a Barroth, if that's fine with you, but we don't have to.
