Is there ANY way to trade items between hunters? I'd kill for a Monster Bone L, but I can't kill what needs to be killed yet.  ::)
nope and you get large bones from the Great Jaggi or a very lucky scavenge.

Uh actually there is a way to trade items but only up to a certain rarity.

I still play, albeit very rarely due to my hectic schedule, and rarely online.

Interesting that this topic revives when I just played offline again for the first time in months.

I just fought my first ever
Which didn't go badly at all, and I had both subquests down and had him limping around with 10 minutes to spare. At which point the paintball wore off and he completely vanished for 8.5 minutes (didn't know where to look for his sleepy spot). By the time I caught up with him there was 1 minute left on the quest timer. I killed him with no more than 30 seconds to spare.

Sorry for the necroposting.
I have to say that I feel ashamed now. I got this game for Christmas, but was so put off by its starter missions and how long it took to get into the game that I barely played up until this past month.

At which point, I've done relatively well for myself. I have a full set of Helios (and its GS, Rathalos, and Lagiacrus armor and I figure I'm decent with a GS. Although, then again, the GS's, especially the special rustshard one, generally just pound the Rathian/Rathalos.

So, after beating the real cause of the earthquakes several times and completing some of the hardest offline quests, I decided to go online. I'm currently like HR14 or so, but I don't really have that many friends yet.

My online name is Serris, I forgot my ID, and I'm in the North American region or something. I try to get on every day, generally on the topmost rookie servers. I'm not sure if I should go on the open servers just yet, either. I'm hoping to get to HR31+ before I do, but it's slow going, especially with all the miscellaneous gathering quests you need to do in the early star missions.

Anyone got any tips for playing longsword or hammer? I'd like to branch out from GS's, but not being able to block is kind of annoying. I'd also like to try bowguns, but those are just different from the blademaster stuff that I'd rather not waste the time and money. (Although I need to find a use for those 200 Bone Husk L's and 300 Bone Husk S's that are sitting around in my item box. I can't bring myself to sell them, just in case I do decide to try gunner.)

Dodge, dodge and dodge some more.

The Hammer, you need to learn when it is hammer time and when it is not hammer time... your moveset and the movement of your prey.  Love the occasional daze.  Its pretty much the same with longsword and any other weapon without the daze and hammer time.

Also, yea, not into gunner myself.  But, thats probably a psp limitation for me....

Look up 'SocialDissonance' on Youtube. This guy has great guides for MH3.
Too bad I could never finish the game, due too the lack of other players.

That's the key to winning + the timing, I've played monster hunter freedom unite for 122 hours (60 hours straight, 4month break, 62 hours straight :p) only to be stopped by a broken psp. Every weapon from longsword to bow is awesome. you just need to know when to attack, and when to dodge ;)

Why no love for SnS? High speed, mobility, dodging and blocking. Best of all worlds!
My online hunting partner is a dedicated heavy bowgunner, and has at this point beaten almost all of offline with only the starting heavy bowgun. I wish I could offer advice beyond "Skilled bowgunners are totally badass to work with", but I can't.

Has something bad happened to longswords in 3? They seemed okay in 2, but the tutorial guy someone mentioned recently said there should be a jail for <insert online buddy who just TKed him> and longsword users.

Longswords have a big swing range and tend to hit your allies if you're all close, I guess it could mean that.
If you play online about 70% of people will be using longswords it seems.

Well, longswords are 'easy'.  Gamefaqs is full of longsword hate.  Lots of Hammer and GS love though.
