Ffffff...

So the TV I'm playing MH3 on? It's a REALLY old CRT TV, with a wonky centering mechanism. Started playing tonight, had about... let's say 1/3rd of my health bar on screen.

About an hour later, it was completely gone.

No hit run here I come!

Other than that, I'm slowly getting used to the bigger controls (compared to MHFU) and having money issues, as is the norm (but now that I've printed off a resource map - gaddamn that dark cave on the island has 8 mining spots!? I only found two so far...) for me in the early game, and swimming works ok except for needing a harpoon to carve some fish which may end up annoying.

Do relize that the points it says on the map may not be there, the resources generate randomly and more pop up as time goes on. In other news I just had to stop playing today because I couldn't seem to get a group that understood the need to 1)heal, 2) if you arn't decent at dodge stop using a weapon that can't freaking block. And these were 20-25 hr people to.

So basically the number one problem i'm having right now is that i can't kill the Rathalos because i can't get a better longsword from Lagiacrus because i can't get the Rathalos longsword. I can't do it online because i can't get my HR up enough because i can't find a group to play with.

Three points;

One, Switch-axes are awesome.

Two, Arena mode with a buddy is great fun. It took us quite a few tries, but we finally killed the Great Jaggi in 2.26 minutes using two bowgunners.

Three, this game likes to kick you in the face.

Tried it out yesterday, when my borthers friedn took it with him.
Even without fighting giant monsters it was quite fun, just running around, gaterhing stuff and enjoying the fine graphics.

Problem is you can't possibly take alle the stuff you find during a quest with you.
And I couldn't tell If i really would need something that I found.

Can't wait when Amazon delivers it on monday.

Wait till you fight a Qurupeco who immediately summons up a wyvern and then flies away, leaving you to get slammed into a wall and firebreathed.
Qurupecos are dicks.

Really? I thought it was easier than the great jaggi (who I can slam without getting hit or using potions)

I'm stuck on the royal ludroth right now, and I thought large monsters were pushovers!

I've been playing online with my gunner friend. Juust unlocked the Urgent for 1* online.

Had an awesome run last night. It was a Qurupeco hunt, and partway through the Great Jaggi showed up. So I took off to kill the Great Jaggi while he stalled with the Qurupeco. I managed to bring it down and carve it and run back, by which time he'd already broken everything it's possible to break off Qurupeco. Then we chased it to area 8 and finished it off. So great.

He's ridiculously pro at gunning. He's already up to 4 stars offline using the starter heavy gun only and still kills things faster than I do.

Also, to everyone who has trouble with the end of a kill mission, it's possible to win with a capture on a kill mission! You miss out on the carve, but the rewards tend to be increased to compensate.

Approach either towards the side of his head, or the southwest/southeast part of its body.  Oh and cut off that tail.  Water fighting sucks though, so if thats the part you're having trouble with I don't blame you.  Remember you can usually trick him into jumping back onto land if it's in the same area.

The Barroth is giving me trouble though.  Barely enough time to get an attack in before he starts his charge again.

Oh ho ho, but don't try to return the shoes, because they won't take them back once you've worn them.

Edit cuz wtf happened to my msg:

You get used the the barroth, but he is still really hard to hit while raging (steam coming out of mouth). When hes like that, I go as careful as I can and try to trap him in a pitfall trap or something.

I've been trying to learn the lance in the arena, but I suck pretty hard. I can barely kill the great jaggi and I always die at least once (not using potions though). I used to use the GS and blocking->countering is much different from the hit-and-run I'm used to. I finally figured out how the counter works (counter->combo), but I still mess up and get hit a good bit. That little quick attack while shielding is also pretty helpful. I can't seem to keep the damn little jaggi away though and I generally suck pretty hard anyway. Any tips on using the lance?

Well I'm kind of insane myself, but I like the increased mobility of the SnS(Used the tomahawk).  (I'll switch to GS if I need to)
I'm not entirely sure how the GS works underwater yet, but SnS jump attack propels you forward in underwater fighting.  Most of my underwater fighting with the Royal Ludroth consisted of me waiting for him to charge, dodging, and then doing a jump attack at him and dodging out of the way again.  If the GS one works the same way, that strategy might still be feasible.  Still...what were they thinking making d-pad control water movement?

GS combat is even slower in water, you do have a viable strategy in swimming up, doing the unsheath strike, then running away unless you're confident that you can get more strikes in. I must say in the "final" boss battle switching to longsword helped alot as I didn't really have to block as much while still having plenty of power behind my strikes.

What was your strategy for killing Rathalos?
