My problem is generally that I accidentally waste all the traps and have to abandon. Sometimes because I misjudge how weak the enemy was, but usually just because when I place it it immediately leaves the area and never comes back. :/

I fought a qurupeco online that ran away 3 times after we set our trap. The damn thing finally made it back to one of the traps and we caught it, but since then I have always carried as many extra traps as I can fit. You could try trapping it when it starts sleeping (gotta leave it alone for a bit for it to sleep) and that should work as long as it doesn't regain too much health.

Does anyone know how to get the poisoned meats to work? I only once had a monster eat it (great jaggi) and it was sleeping already, so it was worthless. What monsters actually eat them?

Monsters will eat if they run out of stamina or i think they'll eat the meat you drop if they don't see you.

I know to watch for when they start limping, but they don't tend to while they're still all-out attacking you, so I end up killing them and getting an insta-fail unless I err on the side of not-dead. :P
And yeah, tricking them into charging into it is how I always do it, but it doesn't help when they've left the area and decided not to return in the next 20 minutes. Do traps disappear after time? I know one of mine vanished when I wasn't in the area, but a Qurupeco (not the target) was, so I'm not sure if he set it off and wasted it or it just timed out.
For the record I'm only having trouble with Royal Ludroth's capture, and it's mostly because I don't have the materials for spare shock traps and pitfalls aren't allowed in most of the areas he likes. Qurupeco was dead easy.

I think I got tainted meat to work all of once in MH1, and not yet in MH3. :/ Of course, I haven't tried that hard.

You can change how you swim? what's it like now? and what is your dodging like? I'm using the same control set-up as you.
The swimming works basically exactly like moving on land, with movement up and down controlled with the otherwise unused second triggers. It gives you a little less control, but also involves less hand contortions.
The dodging...to be honest I changed it right away on the advice of a friend so I don't entirely know what the default is like. I think it has to do with dodging in mid-combo and how it determines which direction you go in. Default uses the point of view of your character and the one I'm using uses the point of view of the screen, or something.

I've been having a hard time gathering the trap materials, I'm hoping when the insect box gets upgraded I'll beable to farm thunderbugs.

userpay: you can always buy thunderbugs at the market in online rooms, nm sorry those are flashbugs.. I have found a bunch in area one of Sandy Plains though

Well, just took out Gobul offline and am on 4 star quests, pretty fun. Barroth by far was the hardest for me as a bowgunner, he is still hard with a team in fact..I get ko'd by him in multiplayer often. Not looking forward to fighting him again in the 4 star quests...

Rolling with full Barroth armor + Large attack up bonus gems and have found that a custom light bowgun is my prefered weapon, not too much of a damage minus from medium bowgun sets, but with much better mobility. Having too much fun with online play, I get sucked in and stay up much to late..

Anyone else playing on US servers besides me and Hideous Being?

I am playing on US servers. I've gotten pretty good at not dieing to Barroth but then again it only takes like two hits from him to put most people down at the level I'm at. Finally have the second set of online quests available to me, I'll probably be looking to do gobul as I need parts from him for a couple of weapons.

I'm going to start farming royal ludroth to get his armor. Also to practice with the great sword. Thunderbugs can be found in the sandy plains bug catching spots.

Got barroth armor made, now I need to grind through offline quests for resources and completeness... And thunderbugs going by the wiki can be found anywhere though I'd assume their more prevalent in certain places.

Well to my knowledge you just had to be online, then again it looks like it wipes your message list each time you log off so maybe it is only when your not in a quest. Anyway just killed the Lagiacrus offline, now I've got to capture the bugger... Ah well at least the trading dude came by so now I've a supply of thunderbugs.

Lagiacrus is very fustrating...I have been ko'd 3 times so far and can not get past the single player kill mission..Wasted about 2.5 hours thus far on him.. Smallish hit box and being in the water really sucks for me

I hate water. Maybe you just need better equipment. I'm grinding up my HR online so i can get better equipment more easily before i go back to singleplayer.
