Don't embark with cows. I know its hard, but you'll just have to live without them.

You could bring along barrels of milk... They only cost 1 point per milk.

I'm about to engage in some DWARVEN SCIENCE to see if milk is an efficient way to get barrels/food.

Turns out milk comes in at least 21 (probably 100) units to a barrel.  Not exactly cost efficient compared to normal food.

You might want to be careful with milk. I once had a glitch that destroyed 100 units of milk when I tried to cook it.

I think the dwarf tried to take it out of the barrel, but then found that for some reason he couldn't cook it, so it destroyed the milk.

I'm embarking at different sites to find one I like.  If there's ever a time to test embarkation strategies, now is the time.

Weeeird.  I bought cow's milk, and there were 21 units in a single barrel.  I'll try again with multiple types of milk.

Strange.  I embarked with 6 units of all three types of milk and 6 units of blood, just for SCIENCE.

I think the way food and drink is stacked in barrels is either buggy or Toady changed it, since I have some meat barrels with five units of meat in them, and others with six units and others with ten.

Also, I have barrels two filled with six units of milk, and one barrel with both 6 units of cow milk and 6 units of cow blood (ew). Note that the cow fluids went together in their own barrel.

On the plus side I found an awesome embark site.

Also, a great way to get cheap barrels is to take one unit of every type of cheap meat you can.

I'm pretty sure if you take both, say, brains and meat of the same animal, they will be dumped together in the same barrel.  Either way, you can still get a lot of free barrels just by taking one meat product from every animal.

Why not just change the embark points you get in the worldgen options?
My plump helmets sell for 20k in the embark menu, so I get 300k to spend if I want.

Skip the medical garbage, thread, bags and all that nonsense, skip the plump helmets and just buy meat rations and some drink buy plump helmets and forge the drink on site.  Obviously forge everything out of copper, and have everyone plant gather + woodcut while your miners are digging out the base.  You only need a wood and a coal for fuel, the rest comes from that axe.  Maybe even skip the meat and count on eating herbs + pack animals and shooting some groundhogs or whatever with their bones.  Animals can be purchased from the caravans, although seriously they are made out of food, ammo and clothes so its a good investment. 

Edit:  Well yea, I don't bother with half these tricks because its too much micromanagement for no real reason.  I guess flux and obsidian are good things to bring, or a ton of wood and rock if your on an aquifier, or just an epic quantity of puppies.

You need to spend points on something, and there comes a point when you have so much booze it is no longer worth it.

Does that include kimberlite? If so I'm bringing that from now on! Blue stone is pretty...

Sadly, no, but it does include Olivine and Pitchblende.

Also, instead of going for steel picks, you could get copper bars for 10 DorfBux or copper ore + fuel for 9 DorfBux as opposed to iron ore + fuel + flux for 36 DorfBux.

Of course  it includes  kimberlite. Most dwarven  civs don't have access to  kimberlite, though.
