Feasts and holidays
« on: November 24, 2006, 06:20:00 am »

Currently it seems there's no point in having a single humoungous dining hall. You'll almost never have every seat taken; I've never had every seat in any of mine used. At most I'll have 4 or so dwarves eating at a time.

This idea basically revolves around being able to pick a day (or perhaps nobles would do it) on which every dwarf in the fortress would head for the largest dining hall available (and smaller ones once that's full) and have a big meal together, resulting in many happy thoughts, full bellies, and drunken dwarves. This could also be used to declare a holiday on which every dwarf doesn't work, and just hangs out and has a good time doing whatever they need to do.

Could also lead to some epic ambushes: the dwarves are all pigging out, and that's when the goblins decide to invade, catching them all off guard in the great hall.

I concur.
What is a dwarven settlement, without some feasts that can be told about in legends, that grandparents can tell their grandchildren ?

For full effect - someone should die coz of overeating and overdrinking.

I can't see a party where someone else attending dies being anything but depressing!

We can't do proper feasts yet though. We need better foods first, set pieces like boars with apples in their mouths and a buffet table. And what kind of party has no pinata?

Hmm... so what feasts are appropriate?

These came to mind:

- Founding day - Anniversary of founding
- King/Queen's Birthday (Optional holiday unless you have King and Queen... at which point every dwarf has to bring a gift?)
- End of Siege day - Anniversary of defeating the siege of ####
- Magma river anniversary
- Adamantium anniversary (usually punctuated by demon invasions :P)

Bloat 92 and 112 are related to this.  And yes, clearly, booze and feasting should be involved.  They roll around on the floor until their sticky beards encircle their bodies in wanton spirals.

Necrobump because I was just thinking how cool it would be if civs created holidays during world gen to commemorate foundings, victories, etc.   In fortress mode, your dwarves would celebrate their civ's centuries-old holidays and maybe create a few local festivals as well.  It'd be a good way of creating some cultural distinctions between civs.
