So, last summer, which in this case is about eight months ago; I took out three books on music theory from my downtown library. One was quite useful, the other two not so much. Before summer ended, one of those books met an unfortunate end (luckily it was the cheapest one). I was terrified to go back with the book in such a condition, so I ignored it, for eight months, along with the other two.

Last time I checked, I owed about $116.89 to the library; that was five or so months ago. I'm dirt poor, but at the same time the longer I ignore, the more the debt accumulates. Problem is, I got cold feet, very, very, very cold feet when it comes to going back to the library.

I've got this sort of image that if I go there, I'll be forced to do something against my will and be stuck for a few days or so, against my will. I have no experience with this, what, the fuck, do, I, DO!?

TL;DR: I HAVE ABOUT $200+ OF LIBRARY FEES, HAVE NO MONEY AND AM A COWARD!

I'm sure the library people will be understanding. It's not like there's an angry homicidal misanthrope at the desk.

Stop ignoring it. The longer you ignore it the worse the problem is.

This is true with any sort of problem, not just fines and fees. The longer you ignore anything the harder it is to clean up the mess when you finally get around to it.

All libraries in my area have a maximum aggregate late fee. A judge would not look too kindly upon paying $1,000 in damages for a $20 item. If not, consider seeking a loan from your bank.

FFFFFFUCK, this advice sucks, and only because it's a list of things I, do, not, want, to, do.

I'm just making it worse by sitting here at this computer... right?

I'm sure the library people will be understanding. It's not like there's an angry homicidal misanthrope at the desk.

I'm afraid to say that the librarian kinda looks like that.

Stop ignoring it. The longer you ignore it the worse the problem is.

LALALALALALALALALALA! I CAN'T HEAR YOU! LALALALALALALALALALA

But I don't want to be a slave to the banks. :(

If you'll keep ignoring it, the library will get real pissed and start sending lawyerz at you! You'll start to fear every doorbell, you'll stop leaving your house, you'll get depressed and allergic to light! Then the judge will get pissed and will pass judgement upon you in absentia, sentencing you to 25 hours in prison and a $20 fee for damaging the property.
And the stigma of being a convict will NEVER leave!

3 easy steps to solve your problem:

1. Get a close friend to go in and tell them you met a painful end in an unfortunate farming accident, and that when they were sorting through your things they found the books.

2. Find a new library

3. GROW SOME BALLS

Owning up to your mistakes is a life skill.  Many people try not to learn it, then others have to pay for their mistakes.  Returning that book is necessary for you to become a healthy, mature human being.

Talk to the librarian, arrange a payment method (Offer sex, I can't imagine librarians get much)

Or you could offer to pay it in installments, they'd rather get the money over time than never.

I took out about three or four books and didn't return them for a year. It cost me £10.

What the hell is wrong with your library? ???

Both one and two can easily be done, three, well that's gonna take some work.

Owning up to your mistakes is a life skill.  Many people try not to learn it, then others have to pay for their mistakes.  Returning that book is necessary for you to become a healthy, mature human being.

Mature, bah! Although when I now think about it, I've allowed this problem to take on a life of its' own. And when I say that, I mean that it comes up out of no where, worries me more as time passes and have even made a topic about it.

May as well start with this fairly small step. :-\

Talk to the librarian, arrange a payment method (Offer sex, I can't imagine librarians get much)

Or you could offer to pay it in installments, they'd rather get the money over time than never.

I'm not ready for that first idea, nor the second one! (Broke, remember...)

I took out about three or four books and didn't return them for a year. It cost me £10.

Credit's a hell of a system ain't it! That or your library gets grants bigger than what the U.S. army budget is.

So in all, I could try to "bribe" the librarian with some books I have, it's no big deal really, but I doubt I have anything worth trading. Shit, now that I think about I should really be thinking about the cha-ching instead.

Take a job, work in the library ocassionally(1 or 2 hours a day) to help pay it off. Take viagra for the 3rd of Khonlint's steps.
