A much quicker way to do it is to simply sink a shaft to
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
in fortress mode and then just abandon so your adventurer can use it.
Worked for me!

I'm pretty sure that's just the psuedo-sites the game uses for underground animalman civs.

I believe those are the locations of sites that can only be accessed from underground.  Since there are several underground layers, sites similar to the new caves appear there which allow you to travel down to the next underground layer.  If you continue to scroll forward from "the depths of the world" you'll see that the magma related underground sites have a different name (which I can't recall), and that the bottom layer is called "the underworld".

it was the only weapon I had. I did "play now!" and spawned as a naked, unarmed human.
I wandered to the human town where my dwarves had dug to hell, and picked up the only armour and weapons I could find on the way (a red rope reed cap and a masterwork bronze bolt)
