Everyone cancels Clean Self: Area Inaccessible
« on: April 14, 2010, 04:21:29 pm »

Now that soap is useful, I finally made some. Now, every dwarf and pet in the fortress is taking turns coming down to the soap stockpile, grabbing a bar, taking a step, and cancelling Clean Self: Area Inaccessible. They then drop the soap and go about their business, giving the next creature a chance to not clean themselves.

Now I have a perfectly accessible brook with a fishing/watersource zone on it, and I even have a small pond in the lobby area of my bedroom complex. Water level is currently at 4/7 and the ramp down into it is covered in blood from creatures that were not injured there, so someone is managing to clean themselves there, but it seems most are not finding it.

Has anyone else seen this? Theories as to what's going on or how to correct it?

Thanks.

Which version are you using? There was a bug with pathfinding in 0.31.01 and 0.31.02. Also make sure, if you're using burrows, that dwarves are allowed to go there.

Maybe you need to craft a stick at the carpenters, so they can reach their ''inaccessible'' area.

That's really not very funny.

That was funny. Well played, 10050.

Dave, I'm using 0.31.03, so it shouldn't be a pathing issue. I have one burrow defined but no one is restricted to it. For completeness I tried extending it to the lobby pool and the well near the dining area. That didn't seem to change anything. For now I've forbidden the soap, and everyone seems to be cleaning the blood off of themselves at the brook normally without soap. Not sure what it would be about the soap that would change things. Does soap cleaning need to happen at another zone that I don't have set up? Hospital maybe? I'll try setting up a hospital with water access and see if it doesn't help. Weird.

I'm also seeing this issue. Have you filed a bug report?

Edit: Added bug report #1170

If you hit a dwarf with moving water with sufficient strength it will knock the baby out of the mother's arms.  The water can then be used to sweep the baby into a well or cistern for drowning.  The device which does this can also double as a mist generator.

I tried that, but then one of my gem setters grabbed it first and now it menaces with spikes of bloodstone.

I have the same problem, sort of... It's a cat called Astesh and a dog named Dumat who seem to play a little game with some soap. I can see both of them grasping the bar of soap in their mouth and then they drop it. I've got PAGES full with them dropping a bar of soap.

I ran into this issue where both dwarves and animals were trying to use soap to clean themselves, I've got no idea whats causing it though banning soap works fine.

I had this issue also, generally what I do is build a large 20x20 out door meeting area surrounded by walls. I ran into this issue in .02 when my meeting area was between my fort entrance and my creek.

I think the constructed walls cause (or caused) some sort of pathing issue and your guys say "Crap, that isn't supposed to be there, cancel job!" It was supposed to be fixed in .03, but last night I had something similar where a two headed monster appeared on the far side of my map, behind my meeting area. My dworfs did an entrance dance while two of their own got beaten to death. I haven't seen the area inaccessible in .03 yet, but I don't have any soap.

I kept getting this from dwarves who would try to wash themselves with soap and drop it as well.  The soap bars were originally in a stockpile with no constructed obstructions blocking pathfinding (dug out peat) and not behind doors either.  I figured maybe the problem was that the only water source I had designated (seaside fort, so salt water up top) was a well two z-levels above a cave river, so I dug out a little section waaaaaaay down overlooking a huge underground lake and designated that as a water source, and also moved the soap stockpile down there.  Well, the dwarves took the soap down, but once it was settled in at the new stockpile, they kept generating the same god damn message, so I just ended up forbidding all soap and sealing it off.

During all this digging and running around, I have gone from 70 dwarves down to 48 in just a few moments, thanks to a rock crystal forgotten beast that was able to breathe some kind of frozen extract dust that blistered my dwarves' bodies from head to toe.  A fun time was had by all.
