It is much more entertaining. If only because you watch for about a minute and then you see the floor coated in (more) blood.

Can blood smear on the walls as they fall?

Yes but then the three children hanging off her will catch fire.
And that's stopped people before...?

Yes.

The trick is to have a splatter platform in the middle where the corpses hit, and around that yet another drop, so now you have all of those blood limbs flying about in every direction, hitting the walls and falling down more.

Generating a map now! seems to create maps 100-150 z deep.
Generating a map with advanced settings seems to generate a map around 40-60 deep.
You can change this via map gen settings.

40d worlds were 15z deep

Around 200 on average.

Sort of a jump from 15, isn't it.

Would dropping living things down a 200 z chute be any more fun then a 10 z chute?

Notably more fun!

First fort went from -29 to 141 (top layer of soil) to 160 (top level of air) = 170 layers underground
New fort goes from -13 to 144 (top layer of soil) to 162 (top level of air) = 157 layers underground

Both maps are 4x4, I suspect the depth is affected by world gen and by how large your embark site is. People embarking on 6x6 maps have reported shallower maps.

The default for a customised map seems to have very thin layer values, so if you do a custom map but don't change those then you seem to reliably get worlds with only 40ish zlevels below non-mountainous ground level.

Boost them up a bit though and you can get 100-200ish underground levels without problem. :)

I am using the newest version, of course!

You may be right, it's entirely possible my map is just shallow. I kinda like flat maps, since mountains aren't the best places for a bustling fortress... unless you can import trees.

Anyway, could someone specify which world-gen parameters make more Z-levels? Is it the "Z levels above <something>" stuff? Or is there something else?

Yeah those are the ones, max all those out and your looking at about ~630ish z levels total. I think I counted ~530 layers below ground and over 100 above.

I think depth varies in a map.

The latest map I genned was mostly only 40z deep. I embarked on multiple deserts, mountains, plains, rivers.... ect.

The plains, forests and deserts were about 40z levels deep.
The mountains were about 70z levels deep.
The only place that was over 100z levels deep was a volcano on a glacier. And that was over 220z levels deep  :o

Then again, this could be due to elevation of that part of the world. (didn't even think about that aspect)

I'm on a volcano on an island, and it is very very tall. It's about 100z just from the top of the mountain to Sea Level.

My current fort goes down 128 z-levels, from ground to bottom. I used Small Island (or Normal Island, which one is second smallest?) world-gen.
