Also, in a blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment, at 1:00 in you can see a broadsword embedding itself into the ground after flying through the air. Awesome.
I'm fairly certain that has been in the game for a while now as I distinctly remember seeing exactly that in an Update Overview video a few months ago.

It's still amazing to see. So much attention to detail in the game.

If you're going to take the time to build an engine from scratch, you may as well spend some time actually getting the physics right, rather than your devteam wanking eachother to your higher-than-ever polygon count. Rock on, Wolfire.

I think I projected much too much onto this game

I am suddenly a lot less enthusiastic.

New video today!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=indL2Ewcr_Q&feature=g-all-u&context=G2d04761FAAAAAAAAYAA

Featuring:
A way to block attacks while on the ground, using the force of the impact to get up.
Scabbards and sheathes. Holds your weapons, and can also be used to bludgeon enemies.
Dual-wielding...sort of. Can hold two weapons, but only one is used for now.

That shifting the sword from one hand to another at the end is some cool stuff.

Each new video shows more and more of where the game is going and where the game is not.

When it was barely shown it had so much potential... that is now mostly gone.

I understand where this game is going and thus there is no where for me to project possible surprises or imagine expansion. In fact the game only seems to be getting less and less interesting with the more I know.

If you want to look at it that way, a blank window is the most promising game of all. :P Overgrowth was always the sequel to Lugaru, now it's much more recognizable as the sequel to Lugaru. What were you expecting?

Something else instead of Lugaru+ (like Lugaru 2)

Better yet remember then intentionally chose to go with "Overgrowth" instead of Lugaru 2. Perhaps something greater or expanded.

Nope. It has chosen what it wants to be and now there is nothing left to excite me. Even worse is even in the concept of being a "improved version of Lugaru" it still doesn't really bloom in my own mind.

Though perhaps that is because I gave them credit that they could actually do what I expected.  They won't now and that is fine, it is just no longer a game for me.

Currently all they're focusing on is the core gameplay. That's the part of the design process where you take one thing and make that one thing as great as possible before you turn your attention to other things. The core gameplay is "hit dudes with things"; but that's all Lugaru ever had, so I'm still excited to see what they'll build around the combat. They've hinted quite a bit at urban gameplay, for example, which implies a lot of interesting mini-mechanics, and they've been adamant about keeping the modding tools as powerful as possible, meaning that the final game will be as much a creative platform as anything else.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Anyhow I won't waste any of your time. I just really dislike it when people imply things against me. I think things through, I just always try to keep hold of the larger picture. Rarely things come in to surprise me.

It just didn't shape up to a game I wanted to buy and that really is all.

Overgrowth is still consider to be in Alpha. Its doubtful, we've seen have the game content by now. What has gotten the most attension, is the combat system.

But AI interactions have seen some novel solutions to interacting with the world, and the Art Assets have shown how they plan to convey the story to us. I think there elements to what they plan for the game, that we havent really seen yet.

We havent really seen any actual levels. We've seen set pieces for some levels, but often those set pieces get broken down into props, so its hard to say we've even seen anything of the game with any finality.

To call it anything right now, is a little premature. But yea, Overgrowth does appear to be a sequel to Lugaru. But they havent had a chance to go beyond Lugaru yet. They havent tried to go beyond Lugaru yet.

My only annoyance with the game is that it has been in development for more than four years. Yet, we still have had no indications of the game actually even getting close to being finished.

They show us their progress all the time, and do their best to make a quality game, so I think the time it takes is unimportant. (hint hint df) As long as it releases in my lifetime I'll be quite fine.

What did you expect Overgrowth would be, and how is it disappointing you?

Honest question. There's still not enough concrete about the game for me to form a final opinion (or even a semi-solid one) on it, but I do like to reserve judgement on these sorts of things... this shouldn't come as a surprise, given present company being the Dwarf Fortress forum and all that.

Addendum: Maybe you got on the Minecraft boat early enough to remember when it was just creative mode with 3 block types, no food or damage mechanics, and no mobs but a bunch of flailing Steves. I would have been a fool to have judged Minecraft based on that Alpha. Take a step back, and consider that this is where Overgrowth is right now in its development; all we see are its fundamental mechanics. It's like booting up NES Mario for the first time, pressing the forward and jump keys, watching what happens, turning it off, and then deciding whether it was a good game or not.

We've seen none of the higher-level gameplay, and nothing of the locations but raw art assets. Most of all, we know nothing of the story but snippets from the comic; even so, they've hinted at a sort of far east Science-Fantasy setup where organic metals grow and are mined, and various castes of animaldudes vie for political and military dominance. There is a lot of interesting potential for such a world, and I'm really curious to see how far they take the Sci-Fi aspect.

Wait, what's this about organically-grown metals? The only real semblance of a story I've seen so far is Turner, the rabbit from Lugaru, and that this world seems to take place a long time after the end of a more advanced civilization, possibly our own.

Yes, I've seen a comic, but it featured a dog warrior leading a bunch of outcasts somewhere. Nothing about growing metal that I could see.
