I've been following development since it was called "Lugaru 2" back around 2005 or so. It still needs work on movement and some of the combat is a little too quick (swinging that huge dog broadsword for example should be harder than it is now) even for a fast-paced game like this.

The things they have achieved on a technical perspective are pretty amazing. One of my favorite things is the 'off the grid;' terrain they have which makes the terrain look a lot smoother.

I don't know if games these days are using this sort of thing but it always bugs me in ARMA2 or other heightmapped games when you have weird angular projections on what are supposed to be smooth hills and dips.

If you aren't already, keep an eye on this game, every week or so they release a video showing their progress.

It's not "every week or so", it's "every Monday morning" unless they're really busy with a new Humble Bundle. And they also release a weekly alpha with the new changes.

What do you mean by "Jedi Academy" combat?  ???

If you played the game you would know what I mean. You hold an attack button, chose a dirrection, and that dictates what you do.

Though this has a block button so I guess there is that.

I shouldn't really expect anything else... this isn't exactly a fighting game like Eihnheartz or Bushido Blade. It sort of is on its own.

I'll keep my uncontrollable rampant pessimism on the downlow for now.

I wouldn't call this anything similar to Jedi Academy except that you push buttons and move in directions.  Jedi Academy's combat was just spam-clicking and trying to get behind your opponent.  This looks a lot deeper and more methodical.

To be fair, turning on realistic dismemberment in Jedi Outcast and Academy made the combat a lot more like this. A single hit from the lightsaber could kill with that cheat on, so it was better to be a little slow and wait for your opponent to expose him/herself.

I preordered Overgrowth about a year ago, and currently have the most recent alpha build, but I really haven't been able to get into it up to this point. I've pretty much gotten owned in the first 30 seconds of any fight that I've tried.

Isn't there supposed to be a training map? I'm pretty sure I saw one on Youtube; your character was invincible while fighting a couple of bunnies.

Jedi Outcast was more fun, less reliant on canned animations like Academy made it more freeform.

Moviebattles 2 has the best saber combat system ever.

There was genuin strategy to Jedi Academy and Outcast outside of spamming. Once you found out the strategy you tended to switch from the very fast weapons (Double, Staff, and Blue) and switched to the slower stances with genuin attacks (Yellow and Red)

Mind you right now there is even LESS in overgrowth outside a block, parry, and a single attack.

There's a single attack button. Lots of different attacks from what I've seen.

The only nuances I remember in Jedi Academy were rotating to change how the saber hit the enemy, and a few kickass moments where I deactivated half of my saberstaff, fought like that until my guy spun around, then while he was spinning turned it back on.  The other half of the saber comes back in mid swing and cuts the other guy's entire body off.

I played around with Overgrowth today. There's a small amount of lag on my system that's probably contributing a lot to my suckiness. I still can't figure out how to reliably kill someone in hand to hand combat, but chopping people up with knives is plenty of fun.

Also, anyone with the alpha should get the SUMLauncher. It'll let you update your version of overgrowth with only a few clicks, and you won't have to download the entire game every week. It also let's you easily install a bunch of user created maps.

If the fighting is anything like Lugaru, go for the neck, or do as in that video and crushstomp them. Or get a weapon.

What kind of system do you have?

Well, maneuvering, timing, awareness of stance advantages, keeping an eye on your force reserves, and basic knowledge of the more complicated attacks were all pretty useful to know, esp on the higher difficulties, where you can easily get one hit-KOd by staves and heavy stance if you don't know what you are doing. There was a lot of depth to the saber combat that only became apparent on the higher difficulties. Ditto for the force powers.

I don't know why people put Academy down so much. It has a better melee system then 90% of what comes out today.
