What would happen if you combined an RPG, Parkour/Freerunning, Martial Arts, Ninja Rabbits, and plunked it all down in Mythic Asia? Let me tell you about a game called Overgrowth...

Wolfire Games (blog here) is putting together a fantastic-looking Game, currently in alpha, which features gorgeous visuals, great music, and most importantly, procedurally-generated martial combat. It's not the button-mashing of a fighting game either, but strategic punches, kicks, flips, and counters, as well as melee weapon combat. You need to fight intelligently as well, using the terrain to your advantage, etc.

Perhaps coolest of all, the team are obviously very passionate about what they do, and are doing it well. This is why I love Indie Games. They're clearly in it for their love of the craft, and not to make big bucks. In the process, they have created something that contains stunning visuals, versatile modding utilities, and gorgeous music, and great sums of awesome.

But don't they actually have like... No actual gameplay footage yet?

Isn't this a bit early to talk about it (except I guess in editing power)

Except the difference is that when I last looked (which I guess has been too long) they didn't even have functional combat or most movement.

Though judging by that Alpha I just watched... It seems like it is still very much the case.

Latest Alpha (they're rolling them out once a week or so) added animations, simple flips/jumps, tied collision detection with maneuvers such that you can fumble them, and more ragdoll physics as evidenced in the links above.

More importantly, I'd like to get the word out that this project exists, and is highly ass-kicking, to those that haven't yet seen it. I am excited.

It looks like they're making good progress. Just play their other game, Lugaru, if you want to get an idea of what to expect from the finished product here.

I pre-ordered this on day 1 and posted at their forum a bit. I've played LittleBIGPlanet with the devs a few times (John mostly). They're a neat bunch of people =P

You have to keep in mind, they started this from scratch. The past year or so has soley been creating the Phoenix engine, and they are still working on that. I don't even know if they've begun working on any of the gameplay elements other than being able to move around the environment and such, maybe push Enemy Rabbot around (in the older alphas) so yeah, perhaps it is a tad early to start discussing it... Their blog is still cool though, they update it every day (up until now, they're thinking about slowing down) and nearly every post has something interesting in it.

I bought the Organic Indie pack with this and Natural Selection 2.

I played Lugaru 1 and found it enjoyable (but hard) and I'm looking forward to the new animal races in this one.

I haven't actually downloaded any of the alphas, since I want to save the full impact for the final game. :P

It'll be cool.

Wild guess, but it's probably some kind of Furry stigma. Silly thing, IMHO. I am confident enough in my Humanity to be able to play a game where I'm a F-ing ninja rabbit, or rat assasin, and find that awesome.

Also yeah, it is still in Alpha, and is not yet a solid game; most of what has been said so far is conjecture based on their goals for the game, but the Alphas have been rolling out pretty steadily, with some nice stuff. Even just the engine, and a few of the maps coupled with the soundtrack has been enough to get me stupidly excited.

I can definitely see interesting things comming from the project, especially if it stays true to the high degree of moddability they've got going on.

I love these guys, their blog is incredibly insightful into their technological processes and they're building a nearly completely open and yet also very polished and intuitive design toolset first and foremost. Needless to say I pre-ordered and was rewarded for my good faith when they made the Organic Indie pack effective retroactively, so I got Natural Selection 2 for free out of the deal.

It is shocking how well made the toolset is, watch some tutorials and you'll see what I mean. You can even do scripting for animation in realtime by editing the text files. It's got a really elegant system.

I like to play games where humans know their place and can't jump 50 feet in the air like rabbits can.

I do believe that rabbits can't quite hit 50 feet in the air, unless they're leaping off a cliff (in which case the sky's the limit!), but yeah, it's neat to use the traits of animals to inspire creativity... we've been doing that for thousands of years, too.

I admit I am wondering about how they're going to handle the different critters, insofar as physical abilities. If we can use the current model as the basis, Rabbits are going to have some high-powered jumps, flips, and kicks. Some of the concept art hints that cats are climbers and tumblers, while rats are sneaky. Dogs and Wolves seem like they're both different flavors of brutes, but one uses Weapons and Armor, and the other are of a more Barbarian flavor.
