The HFS tubes will go up a random length of the pipe. Sometimes it's only the bottom level you need fear, sometimes the whole damn pipe. Usually the top half is reasonably safe.

Also, bravo. That is an incredibly tall pipe of <shiny>.

First, construct a wall around it. Seal up a miner within that wall. Make sure it reaches to the ceiling so fliers cannot escape.

Have Urist McSacrifice keep on digging. Dig as much as you dare.

If you dig too deep your fortress will not be lost, as nothing can get through a constructed wall.

If you want to keep the adamantine, each layer or two you can de-construct the wall, remove it, let the miner eat/drink then seal him up again and continue digging.

@OP: You should probably put [spoilers] in title, even though the OP is in spoiler tags.

I don't think the open spot inside the tube is ever anything but 2x2 (though it is not the same 2x2 space all the way down- at least one tile above is open to the next level down) so you can safely mine away certain parts of the column.

Since it's only possible for an open space to exist inside a 3*3 block, I'd recommend cutting away the rock all the way around the vein to get a clear view. Any pieces of adamantine that are only 1-2 squares thick are safe to mine.

I thought it was a 2x2 hollow space surrounded by a wall, so the dangerous section of the tube is a 4x4 block.

I don't remember any 1x1 empty space inside the tubes I've seen so far, but I could be wrong.

Once i had a 163zlevel-high spike that becomes tube (e.g. open into slade cavern) only in 2 or 3 lowest zlevels.
So there were about 3000 adamantine boulders.

I had a 60 Z level tube. Breaching the top layer instantly alerted the demons at the bottom.

Haha. I wish it be so!
But...
Then i suddenly tapped HFS on that lowest zlevel and received A FCKN ARMY of these deepy funny critters.
And my FPS gone to zero in a second after as they began their pathfinding attack.

Would carving out fortifications reveal the tube? If so, carve fortifications before you dig out any squares, and if you hit demons, you know where it's safe to dig.

That would still kill your FPS, though.

Yeah, you'll get an instant FPS kill in the moment you reveal the tube.
