You do not need well AT ALL if you have easy acces to water. Well is really just a shorcut to water that lies somewhere else.

Also considerably safer than letting your Dwarves wander across the countryside.

Very weird..I must have some odd bug is all I can guess then...the fort in question (its kinna dead now) had a full page of buckets.  Nobody could bring water until I built a well that tapped into a reservoir I created.

I wanted to build a well on this map because the top of thw waterfall was frozen, but the bottom was free running! (but in a canyon, so not accessable without a miner)
but its ok now, a caravan arrived! lets hope he has useful items.

If you don't have an ax, build a carpenters shop, then a wooden training axe. The woodcutter can then use the training ax to cut down trees.

I immediately got the image of a dwarf gnawing a hunk of wood until it's a vague ax-shape, beating it against a tree until tree and ax both splinter to pieces, and then dragging the largest chunk back to the carpenter's shop to gnaw into a new ax.  It's the dwarven Sisyphus!

Can you not build training picks? There doesn't appear to be any special tags on wood or picks vs other weapons so I don't see why not. Unfortunately I'm at work so can't test it.

The big thing with practice weapons is that the edged attacks are switched to blunt, so I suppose Toady's thought was that you can't make a hammer any blunter than it is.  Still, it would be nice just to have wooden hammers to train with.  The only hammer in my current fort is an artifact aluminum one.  I wonder how that will go with the wood training axes and total lack of armor

Probably because there is not much difference between a wooden axe and a wooden hammer/mace. It's just a stick with a larger block of wood at the top. No idea if training with a wooden axe trains hammering, too, though...probably not.

It's possible (but not likely) that you can just make a wooden hammer.  Or pick an extremely lightweight metal.
