Design challenge: Repeating designs for diagonal walls
« on: April 14, 2010, 08:13:32 am »

I use one of the tilesets with diagonal walls.  And I find that, since I have diagonal walls, I generally try to make sure some portion of my fortress incorporates them.  Here are some examples:

The flower-looking things here are workshop complexes:

These are noble rooms.  Each "clover" is one set of quarters, with bedroom, tomb, dining room, etc.

This was my first attempt at common apartments.

Another set of common apartments.

I'm looking for other patterns I could use to take advantage of my diagonal walls and really show them off.  Unfortunately, I'm not nearly creative enough to do so on my own.  So I throw it open to you folks.  Anybody have any interesting patterns they'd like to unveil?

Nothing, eh?  Ah well.  Was worth a shot.

Well, I'm not sure this would work, but you might be able to have a sorta slotted arrowhead design like so:
Code: [Select]
. = floor
X = wall
d = Door

XXX.....XXX
X.XX...XX.X
X..XX.XX..X
X...XdX...X
X.........X
XX.......XX
XXX.....XXX
X.XX...XX.X
X..XX.XX..X
X...XdX...X
X.........X
XX.......XX
XXX.....XXX
X.XX...XX.X
X..XX.XX..X
X...XdX...X
X.........X
XX.......XX
XXX.....XXX
X.XX...XX.X
X..XX.XX..X
X...XdX...X
X.........X
XX.......XX

etc

Could also try something like (though I'm not sure where the doors would look best):

Code: [Select]
X = Wall
. = floor

....X.......X.......X
...XXX.....XXX.....XX
..XX.XX...XX.XX...XX.
.XX...XX.XX...XX.XX..
XX.....XXX.....XXX...
.XX...XX.XX...XX.XX..
..XX.XX...XX.XX...XX.
...XXX.....XXX.....XX
....X.......X.......X

A variant on your octagons:

Code: [Select]
..XXXXX...XXXXX..
.XX...XX.XX...XX.
XX.....XXX.....XX
X.......X.......X
X.......X.......X
X.......X.......X
XX.....XXX.....XX
.XX...XX.XX...XX.
..XXXXX...XXXXX..
.XX...XX.XX...XX.
XX.....XXX.....XX
X.......X.......X
X.......X.......X
X.......X.......X
XX.....XXX.....XX
.XX...XX.XX...XX.
..XXXXX...XXXXX..

For the second one, you'll end up with people traipsing through each others rooms, but who cares!  ;D

I've gotten large circles to work a lot better with a diagonal tileset; also, 3x3 pillars look much nicer.

Also, d>b>h-ide rocks on the ground in the bedrooms for screenshots. Looks so much cleaner.
