Should adventurers be nerfed?
« on: April 14, 2010, 04:13:27 am »

I don't know about you guys, but I tend to find adventure mode to be too easy. As it stands, you start out with metal gear, above average stats and you have the opportunity to put quite a lot of points into combat skills.

That's why I actually prefer the Human: Play now! option. You start out as a naked weakling, with the threat that pretty much anything can kill constantly being present. You have to pick off lone stragglers, and cautiously utilize all the wrestling tactics you know, to survive your first combat encounters. Not to mention the sense of satisfaction when you finally get your first weapon and clothes, and armour later on.

So, what are your opinions?

Yep, nerfing seems ideal. But Toady did say something about "levels of play" in DF Talk 6. Basically you could be a survivalist, just making your own way out in the woods, building yourself a cottage and hunting animals, with skills not that much better than your average hunter. Then he was saying something about heroic fantasy, where you essentially are supposed to be overpowered, to the point that only outnumbered or faced with something really big and really strong can you be realistically wounded.

(also, the whole bleeding-to-death-from-minor-wounds thing kinda mitigates how powerful adventurers are)

Two things.
First, I like being totally badass. That's where the fun begins, for me. Since you crazy wuss-lovers can just create their character with less points, there's no need for a nerf.

Second, you do know you can Play Now! with other civs by adding the [INDIV_CONTROLLABLE] tag to their entity RAW, right? Play Now! serpent men are way sweet.

I think the humans and dwarves probably start out with a bit too much gear, it would be good to start humans in particular out with cash instead of equipment so that they have have some choices about what to buy in the shops.

That's why most of my adventurers have been elves now that they can actually find usable metal armour

Well, pardon me if I like dying horribly. :D

I played as a caped crusader of the night in adventure mode, a grizzly bear tore me in half.

My successful one though, a cave fish man (a BLIND cave fish man) set out to slay the evil dragon Fone. It tore me in half.

To be fair, you'll die horribly at some point in Adventure mode, regardless of how many legendary stats you have.

In the case of dwarffortress that is a losing move too, and the only un-Fun way to do so :) Joshua would have had issues trying to solve it.

We need to find the real one and install Dwarf Fortress on it.

Being able to kill a dragon (or any other fleshy megabeast) immediately is pretty lame.  However, adventure mode is so incomplete that starting out with nothing is less of a game and more of a chore.  I'm still not sure how to make money, apart from hoping that a megabeast decided to steal something more valuable than a chalk crown.

Plumbing the depths is currently a very silly endeavor since layers are so far apart (need to find the world gen setting to fix that) and the connections are tough to find even when you do get the discovery message.  I've yet to try to destroy a civilization, but I suspect that the bonuses granted by any sort of armor, even clothes, will make that a little harder than last version (but with fewer arrows passing through every major organ).

Also, training weapon skills remains disproportionately time consuming when compared to wrestling.  A happy medium would be nice, since mastering a few weapon types would be very useful.

I have no desire to spend 5-6 hours training up stats and skills in semi-BS ways like many of the stories I hear about. I think adventurers are fine, or if anything need a bit of a boost. The real problem of course, as pointed out already, is that adventurer mode isnt even to what I'd call an alpha stage yet.

Adventurers are too strong, and at the same time, too weak.

They can cleave through most enemies with near-total immunity to weapons. Is that fun? Is that suspenseful? No, that's boring.

If they get so much as a papercut, they will probably bleed to death. If they don't, it'll get infected and they'll die. Is that fun? Is that exciting? No, that's lame.

Nerf adventurer combat stats, and buff adventurer healing.

so far all I hear is go back to 40d adventure mode where every thing can one shot you to death(some can in 31 but it's less than common) yet one can travel their worries away.
have any one tried retiring in a town after getting cut up to see if that would heal them? or using bandages from abandon forts?
also I thought this version adventure mode goal is to go to the bonus level and rack up bonus multipliers killing randems. it's not much a need of nerf just people lack of goals in the game. so did anyone become an goblin king yet?

I say no to the nerf. If I want realism with my mass-murder I'll join the Marines.

I... never actually did have anything one-hit-kill me in 40d, not even the KILLER AX-WIELDING SCORPION. That sort of thing has only happened to me in the new version (Bronze colossus fell off a cliff on top of me).
