X-com doesn't let you damage ground tiles, but any hill or ramp, you can level. Additionally, Blaster Bombs allow you to (at last!) breach the outer hull of a UFO.

I honestly can't remember any game bar the original two Red Factions and Worms 3D where you can tunnel through to your objective. RF:Guerilla added ludicrous destruction of buildings, but from the gameplay vids it seemed you can't do much to landscape anymore.

You can smash apart almost any man made object in the game using nothing more than a sledgehammer, it's true.  But yeah, the actual dirt is entirely immovable.

Destructible terrain is important to X-com players because of our time-honored tradition of making doors instead of using ones we find.

Does the AI do the same thing?

Thankfully, the AI is content with being able to see in the dark, mind control Doofus McSpackypants from across the map and telekinetically pull the pins from all your grenades. Then just carpet bomb your doods.

As I recall, the only game where the AI is more or less conscious of its destructible environment is the Silent Storm series. But otherwise it was rather straightforward, even if it had some ludicrous detail with the destructions - I dare say on par and maybe superior to Guerilla. There was also Laser Squad Nemesis, which would be a VERY good system to remake X-Com in - RTT turned TBT - basically the same X-Com thing with TUs, but you plan TU usage for the turn, and then both sides move simultaneously.

LSN was actually a project of the Gollop brothers - the doods responsible for X-com.

Frozen Synapse is an indie game that uses the same system. I think if X-com was going to be rebooted that would be a good way to do it.

No wonder - Laser Squad was, like, THE predecessor to UFO. Or was Rebelstar first? I don't remember. I remember playing Rebelstar and Rebelstar II on the Spectrum, so I'm not sure if Laser Squad was before or after then.

Laser Squad (Original and Nemesis) and the Rebelstar games are all the Gollop brothers, so....

I'd be interested in playing LSN against someone, but I only ever had the demo.

Bump.

Anybody seen the new preview trailer for 2K's "X-Com"?  Epic Fail

2K Games:
Let's remake X-Com!  Except this time, instead of a tactical turn-based strategy game, it will be a first person shooter.  And instead of basing it in modern times, it will be based in the 50's.  And instead of using flying saucers, and grays, we'll rip-off 2001: A Space Odyssey's Monolith and use black liquid goo for the aliens.

So yeah, this is totally going to be an X-Com remake!

Seriously, why couldn't they just call this Bioshock 3: This Time You're On Land instead of raping X-Com?

Yep, I agree. It's definately -not- X-Com

Oh well, it seems like they didn't even say "Let's remake X-Com!  Except this time, instead of a tactical turn-based strategy game, it will be a first person shooter."

It seems more like they said "Let's make a shooter game about aliens(?), and use a well known name to help sell/market it"

Dragon Rising anybody?
