Is it wrong that my first thought at that picture was to wonder why the grenade wasn't armed to blow as soon as the guy died so he couldn't turn into another chryssalid?
My thoughts exactly...

Now what???

After reading their site, I am cautiously optimistic about this company's game.

Now what???
Aren't there like 3 X-Com indie games being made at any given time? It'll be nice if this one turns out to capture that ol' X-Com gameplay style, but thus far every attempt has made sure not to do that at all, starting with not making soldiers expendable and fragile.

There are several open-source/fan groups making games, but this is the only one that I've looked at that's trying to be an actual game development company.

And they're specifically going for the X-Com style anyone-can-and-probably-will-die. Like I said, after reading all the stuff they've put up and looked at their forums, I'm cautiously optimistic. They might fade away or produce something that's junk in the end but...I can hope.

Let's compare notes shall we, "XCOM" developers?

Quote from: Firgof Umbra
Expect to walk around your base office, maybe direct your scientists through conversation menus[...]
Quote from: OXM
-A team of people in one glass-walled corner are busy listening to radio transmissions, searching for intel that might be useful in your mission.

-In the planning room, meanwhile, it’s time to take the intelligence you’ve acquired and decide your next move. Which lead your should pursue? Something strange is a foot-something not of this earth. Carter is seeking evidence of extraterrestrial activity, be it biological or elemental-the latter referring to Elerium, a potent energy source that powers the entire underground facility and is sought by the US govt for the use of weapons apps.

Quote from: Firgof Umbra
Expect BioCOM with a linear, tiered, Research system (perhaps between missions, or if they're lazy you get to research only what you 'pick up' during missions and those are breadcrumbed throughout your 'adventure'?)

Quote from: OXM
-In another area tech expert Malcolm Quinn-the Q to your James Bond-is busy assembling your next gadgets in his search lab, aided by a team of engineers.

[..]Elerium, a potent energy source that powers the entire underground facility and is sought by the US govt for the use of weapons apps.

-Did you enjoy taking pictures of enemies in Bioshock 2? 2K AU clearly thinks so: they're adding it as a major evidence gathering component of XCOM. Snap pics of unexplained phenomena-no matter how grisly-and you'll gather research that Quinn then uses to build you new alien based weapons and gadgets for future missions.

Quote from: Firgof Umbra
[...] embark on missions (ala Mass Effect 2) that are either given to you or that you have a choice between options.I doubt the aliens will randomly invade places because they're going to want to go for cinematic polish and to do that you have to know where your levels are taking place and have 'set piece encounters'.
Quote from: OXM
-Examining the large US map on the wall, we have the option of heading to Wichita, Kansas; Bangor, Maine; or Flagstaff, Arizona. 2K promises that each mission will offer a range of choices of where to go and because the game unfolds in quasi-real time, picking one mission might cause you to miss out on others. In gaming terms that means the leads in towns you pass up might go cold by the time you return from the location you do visit.

-This setup should diversify the campaign experience, giving you and your friends completely different stories to share about your play-troughs. In our demo, we made our way to the Grand Canyon State to check out reports of “swarming insects’-a hint that our precious Elerium was nearby.

[..]All is quite in the backyard except for some odd sounds-foreign noises made even more eerie silence permeating the entire neighborhood-and the continued trail of residue running up the side of the white house. A red lawnmower lies on its side. Still running, its exposed blades remain spinning, ready to slice and dice anyone-or anything-that gets too close.
[..]Our sense of dread intensifies as we move through the house. In these close quarters and tight hallways, we’d have a difficult time dodging the goo if any of it leaps out at us here. We follow a slime trail upstairs and discover the nursery, complete with mutilated mom and no baby. There is no Elerium either.

-With Frank and Jones at our back we move back downstairs and toward the front door. Remember how we’d come in through the side? A wise decision as three blobs ambush us in the living room!

Quote from: OXM
-Lead designer Ed Orman tells us that the team did their homework before starting the project. We clocked a lot of hours with the original. He shares with a laugh.
:|  Either they didn't clock 'a lot of hours' with the original or they 'didn't do their homework' in my humble opinion.

It seems all my predictions are not only coming true, but nearly to the T.  And if all my predictions come true, in my opinion, it utterly ceases to be an X-Com game in every right and should be instead called "The X-Files: Reloaded" or "Horror/FPS: Now with Research/Photography!".

Everyone who hates this game based on what info we currently have is going to hate the game anyway no matter what.

I'm going to get it based on whether or not it's a good game in and of itself, not whether it's a worthy successor to the (mostly defunct, and don't deny it) X-Com name. If it's both, then bonus points to 2k. If it's just a good shooter, that's fine too. If it's neither, then I'll shrug and go get something else.

When It comes to this, I'm sure that they'll make a fun game. The big question is whether or not it will be an X-Com game. Unless they nail every aspect of this just right, I don't think it will be considered canon.

Judging from the quotes brought forth by Jotes, it won't be an X-Com game much more than Enforcer was.

But at the same time, what the fans consider canon is irrelevant. What the license holders consider canon is what will be used in future sequels. Even if it contradicts things in the previous games (much like Fallout 3).

I'll probably try it if I get the chance and it's not universally considered mediocre like the Ghostbusters game, but I will not pay for franchise rape.
