I always thought it was encouraged. I mean, when you conceal a weapon it's generally not to cause shock and fear, whilst an unconcealed weapon generally does do that.

No, see, in Australia carrying a concealed weapon (or a weapon you don't have a license for I think? Something along those lines) is against the law, and walking along the street with a knife out will get the police called.

See, in Australia, the police are trained to handle dangerous situations and if you're being menaced by a person with a weapon, you're not supposed to pull your own weapon and have at him. There are some parts of town where it isn't safe to travel at night, but that's true for anywhere and usually, (fairly rare) muggings don't leave people dead because they pulled a pocket knife on a mugger that could well be carrying one of their own.

EDIT: This isn't the topic for this. Feel free to post whatever pithy comment you want on freedom and liberty and how carrying a weapon is a good idea because people won't attack other people if they might be carrying a weapon or whatever, but if you want to discuss this start a topic.

That means it's perfectly legal to walk around with a crossbow, coilgun, blowgun, or other, non-firearm projectile based weapon.
Just as long as it's not concealed.

Nope.  It's generally referred to as "brandishing" and some states at least definitely outlaw it.  Here's an example from California law:

Every person who, except in self-defense, in the
presence of any other person, draws or exhibits any deadly weapon
whatsoever, other than a firearm, in a rude, angry, or threatening
manner, or who in any manner, unlawfully uses a deadly weapon other
than a firearm in any fight or quarrel is guilty of a misdemeanor,
punishable by imprisonment in a county jail for not less than 30
days.

And even in the ones that don't outlaw it explicitly, if you go around pointing a knife at people, you will get the cops called on you, and they'll find something to charge you with.
