The best solution would be getting out of the evil biome, I guess.

Are you an Elf?

I know it's unrealistic, but I can't help but imagine little bearded babies for dwarves. In my mind, they come out of the womb fully bearded. That's how the mother carries them around, too, she just drags them around by the beard or ties it to her belt. When the father's on duty, he just ties their beards together and the baby just kind of hangs there, swinging to and fro with Urist McDaddy's movements.

Well, that's why. Elves are "loved" by all the cuddley wuddley alive animals. So you're not going to get ambushed, except by undead.

Ambushes in general do seem decreased, which is lame now that we can survive that first wolf pack.

For traveling manually, glaciers or other large flat areas will let lots of wildlife see you. Haunted glaciers work well for me. I imagine deserts or wastelands would be good too. For fast-travel, the deepest forests still pop wolves or other wildlife every few steps.

Do I need to play a human to get ambushed at all? Because I think my dwarf is too short to even get noticed by creatures.

Yes. Clearly a bug that ought to be fixed in the future, but exploit it in the meantime.

The "Dwarf On Fire" solution is a pretty good way to get noticed, but I doubt they would attack you. Hell, if you survive enough, Goblins might put you as your leader.
