So can I eat these groundhogs, or what?
« on: April 13, 2010, 11:41:11 am »

I just started playing this game, so I'm still trying to figure out some of this stuff. I had seen some wolves running around outside my current fortress, so I put out some traps and caught...a bunch of groundhogs. Can I do anything with these guys?

It's still early times, so more food is always welcome, but I haven't been able to locate an option for butchering them. If that isn't possible, can I let them out of their cages so I can use the cage for something more worthwhile? How do you release a caged creature?

Thanks for any help.

EDIT: Okay, I tried trading them with a caravan and they all got out of their cages and are running around. But my dwarfs seem to be killing and butchering them at least.

If you want to eat them, you should tame and then slaughter them.

Take a look at the z -> animals screen.

You could also have them breed to supply you with groundhog meat.

Trying to sell wild animals (or captured invaders) triggers a bug where the dwarf will take the cage to the trade depot, leaving the contents free.  Hilarity ensues.  To butcher a wild animal caught in a cage, you need to either tame it, or figure out a way to kill it.  Release it into your barracks and have your military kill it, or let it loose into a hall of retracting spikes or weapon traps, or drop it down a ten Z-level fall.

Cool, yeah, I figured I could set my military on them if I could get them out of their cages, but I didn't see how to release them. The trading bug is a pretty amusing solution, as I can celebrate every time a caravan comes to town with a good old-fashioned groundhog hunt.

I had read that I had to tame an animal before I could slaughter it, but the groundhogs don't show up in the kennel menu, I think because they are PET_EXOTIC?

Not sure on the pet_exotic, though if that's what it says in the raws, you might be right. Weird if that's the case, though.

As far as releasing them, you need to [ b]uild the cage, move all your groundhogs into it, and then set up a lever to open it.

Bonus points if you make it arena-groundhog-roundup style.

So there's that, as well. It looks like the only chronic problems that water can't cure are nausea and cave spider bites.
Which, coincidentally enough, can be cured by magma.

PET_EXOTIC means you need a Dungeon Master to tame them.

Groundhogs aren't exotic pets, unless something changed. You need the option "tame large animal" in your kennel, and then you can select the captured groundhogs.

Releasing them, having your dogs and wrestlers tear them apart, and butchering what's left works as well though... ;)

Building the cage! That was the step I was missing, thanks.

In the course of trying to figure this out I read that a bunch of previously non-exotic pets have become exotic in the new version. (Or a couple anyway, at least foxes and raccoons.)

You have to tame first. After your animal tamer spends some time with it, getting it to be friendly and trusting, you can slaughter it and devour the remains.
