Then again I have very odd tastes that I won't get into here.

Odd tastes? DF fan? IMPOSSIBLE!

;)

And bandages, I agree that a lot of rap is completely stupid, but theres more to it than most people are willing to give credit. At least, was, until MTV essentially made it into nothing but catchy beats and celebrations of decadence.

I'm a fan of Saul Williams.
Also, not exactly rap or hip-hop, but the same kind of vocals, but RATM is seriously kickass.

Dr. Steel? Very avant garde- ranges from 'industrial hip-hop' to 'orchestra with hip hop elements'. There is a song about fibonacci sequences, firmly placing it out of the mainstream.

Rap?
Maybe?
Probably.
The Fibonacci one.
Edit: Also this, which is either rap or opera.

Back on topic - What about those who use hip-hop to spread good messages for once?

Lupe Fiasco: Hiphop saved my life - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vPiKKfcjI-4

Mos Def: Auditorium - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UT-hYXqTN38
Life is good - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fu5UVpLvGck&feature=related

And something a little darker-
Immortal Technique: Caught in a Hustle: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nia0_dMFfE4

And yeah, I second anything by Aesop Rock.

Nerd is fine. It doesn't have to be all gangsters and pimps.

My cousin saw MC Chris live.

He has since taken every available opportunity to tell me that his backpack's got jets.

Gorillaz, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, The Roots, OutKast, Cypress Hill, Jedi Mind Tricks (YMMV on that one...), Wu-Tang Clan, Digable Planets, Arrested Development.

'Course, I have a particular "style" of hip-hop that I tend to like, so again your mileage may vary.

Literally the only rap album I have sitting on my computer (or elsewhere, for that matter) is El-P's "I'll Sleep When You're Dead". I haven't listened to it in a while, but I think I remember it being pretty good.
