Speech improvement ideas
« on: April 12, 2010, 05:51:19 pm »

Often I pronounce 'sss' as 'shh', especially when I am speaking quickly. Has anyone had this problem, and are there any ways I can get rid of this?
I have quite an overbite (probably will get it fixed eventually), could that be what is causing it?

Yeah, that might have to do with it.  Try to concentrate on pronouncing your s's farther forward in the mouth--the only difference between sss and shh is the position of the tip of your tongue, really.

It might help you to look at one of the linguistic articulatory charts (you should be looking at alveolar fricatives vs. palatal fricatives, I think).  Good luck =)

I said 'd' and 'f' instead of 'th' until I was about 16. Practice it lots and you'll get it eventually. I think everybody sometimes says 'sh' instead of 'ss', so it's not as bad as it could be.

Okay, so, today this girl I know-Lauren, just took a sudden dis-interest in talking to me. Is she just on her period or something?

I've taken to practice "public" speaking by picking a book and reading it aloud as if I were preaching whatever it says, when I am home alone.

Thanks.
I'm hoping it'll be more natural once I get overbite fixed/teeth straight etc.
