DF2010: Dwarves aren't strictly monogamous anymore?
« on: April 12, 2010, 05:02:12 pm »

I had an immigrant who brought 2 children and no husband along. In her relationships and those of the children, no father is mentioned, but there must have been one, of course. So, I expected her to stay a single.

However...

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

She just started a relationship with one of the other dwarves: you can see that there are two children, and one (new) lover in her relationship list.

So... aren't dwarves strictly monogamous anymore? If they lose their husband and become widows, will they then seek new husbands?

Or is this just a fluke?

IIRC, migrants are gen'd on the spot. the kids never have a father at all, but check legends to be sure...

Sometimes single migrants will arrive with children in tow. I just regard them as adopted orphans.

"Adopted orphans" sounds likely. I noticed that one of the kids was incredibly fat, the other incredibly thin, while the mother was neither. This seemed a bit odd already.

I'm inclined to think that fat is not hereditary, but body frame is. In any case, I've also seen a lot of 'adoptions' and would like to see it addressed by Toady. These are definately bugged migrants as we've never seen anything like it before and we've no reason to think its deliberate.

As far as I know, immigrants are now being taken from 'real' dwarves (from world gen) rather than generated on the spot. Maybe something isn't making the transfer properly... Maybe look up the mother in legends mode and see if something happened to the father?

Hm... no. No history outside of her time in my fortress.

She settled in 201, became a member of the group in 201. She became romantically involved in 204.

Interesting is the following though:
In 206 (I abandoned the backup of the fortress then) she became a member of some other group. In 206, she fled into The Swamp of Hailing.

I've read of The Swamp of Hailing on the latest artifact: some filth monster was traveling around there in year 1.

And.. yes, all of my dwarves fled into this swamp. No other history at this hospitably sounding place. Just the filth monster 200 years ago, and now 22 new dwarves.

I guess that this means that the inhabitants of an abandoned fortress now stay alive? But obviously not inside of the fortress.

... oh dear carp: the legends thing records whenever someone prepares a masterful lavish meal? This might turn a bit bloated or cluttered in a while.

The child Stakud is a bit more revealing. He did have a father, but that one's name "has been lost to time". He is called the son of that immigrant in the legends.

Same for the other child.

And all 3 of the lot worship the same god.

Hey... that might turn out to be interesting, if the immigrant Id is going to be converted from her current god, "Atesh Volal Egul", to the god of her lover, "Agesh Mözirsastres Ganadeges". Will the kids change their object of worship, too?

fat no..metabolism (the process of a living body making energy from food and storing the rest as fat) yes. So, although you can't inherit the fat, you CAN inherit a slow metabolism that will naturally make you "fat" (unless kept under a VERY strict diet/exercise plan).

If you hit a dwarf with moving water with sufficient strength it will knock the baby out of the mother's arms.  The water can then be used to sweep the baby into a well or cistern for drowning.  The device which does this can also double as a mist generator.

Oh come on! Every great meal deserves to go down in something. Some meals go down in history, others go down in dwarf stomachs.

Well, I pointed at that lavish meal because it's the only masterwork that my fortress produced so far. But think of a grown-up fortress: thousands of masterful cat bone earrings, engravings, and dyed cloths...

About the fat: you guys are turning my cow breeding program upside down. After "gigantic" and "enormous", I wanted to turn the herd to the "fat" side of genetics.

Masterworks were recorded in legends last version too (IIRC they have been since the first 3d version). Yes, it's incredibly annoying and makes legends almost useless for actually viewing your fortress history. They also show up in engravings and such too, which makes for some boring murals.
