miners not picking up pick
« on: April 12, 2010, 02:23:32 pm »

i designated two new dwarves as miners but they are not picking up a pick. it just says no job next to their name.  The picks are not forbidden or anything and are in a bin.

Probably either they have poor focus as a trait or you have nothing mining-related designated that they can reach.  Digging ramps in particular is a lot more finnicky now: to dig a ramp into a section of earth that has no ground at the base, you actually have to channel the earth above, not dig a ramp on the level below it.  The channels automatically form ramps that way.

They might have something already in hand.  Check and make sure that they're not holding something, and if they are, set it for dumping.

I had this problem when I started my new fortress yesterday, none of my miners-to-be would pick up picks from my wagon. I had to remove mining from them, save, reload, and enable mining again for it to work.

I had this problem aswell (also what appear to be a few other idling issues, as dwarves tend to go idle if they go near certain tiles sometimes, leading to little clusters of idle dwarves scattered around). Right now the solution for me is to save, quit and reload, seems to kick them back into action for a while.

Had the same problem a few days ago, one of my miners was killed in a cavein and the other one was injured, after that nobody wanted to mine even though extra picks were available and additional miner labors were assigned. Had to revert to earlier savepoint.

oh my this is good news... (that I'm not alone in this, that is)  I put my original miners in the military, but the new miners didn't do any work.  I think the military-miners had kept their picks as weapons, so I assigned them new ones yet still the new miners didn't dig.  The "fortress" expansion has come to a halt...  :(
Reloading works?  Shall try that..

I am having some problems too, I had an immigrant with some mining skill that I wanted to add to the two miners from my embark.  I made a copper pick for him and one of my military dwarves picked it up and won't drop it even when it was forbidden.  I tried changing weapon order from individual choice, melee to battleaxe and that didn't help either.  Trees are becoming scarce so I don't want to make a bunch of picks.

One interesting consequence was the dwarf with the pick became a miner after training with it a little.  Maybe a good way to train up miners?  If you train a dwarf with an ax does it become a woodcutter?

Try marking the axe for dumping, I had a similar problem - though I haven't yet solved it and a Furnace Operator has decided to grab the pick even though he has no need for it.

In any case, when I marked the pick for dumping the offending civilian did put it in the dump. Only problem is that the miner wouldn't pick it up. Still, you might get further than I in working around the problem.

Turn off their mining labours, save and reload, then turn it back on. If they're not in the military they should get to work. Not sure if the latest version of Dwarf Therapist has this little glitch, but a lot of the time it won't work to assign mining through it.

I've noticed this in DF.

If I use DF to assign a dwarf to mining or woodcutting and commit to changes they get the skill selected in game, but they will not actually pick up the mining pick or axe.

I have to manually turn on mining or woodcutting for each dwarf in game for them to pick up the axe.

I haven't tried saving/reloading the game though, so no comment on that working or not.

No, the reason why that training with a pick gives you the mining skill is because mining is the skill that is used when a pick is wielded.  The skill for an axe is axedwarf (the skills for wielding these weapons are separate tags than whether they can be used for digging or cutting down trees)

Yes, Dwarf Therapist is currently bugged when it comes to switching on mining or woodcutting (hunting too, but that's so broken it's hardly worth mentioning).

If you've used Therapist to enable mining that would explain your issues.

Regardless of using Dwarf Therapist or the ingame option, saving and reloading, checking if the dwarf is holding something,  I simply can't get him (the designated miner) to pick up the mining pick.
