Dwarf Vs. wild: The ultimate fortress survival challenge

Your mission: Survive.
The problem: No skills. No Items. At all.
The goal: Make it to 100+ Dorfs

I noticed everybody says a "minimalist" fortress is starting with an anvil and copper... lies. Start with nothing, trade the first caravan plants for a pick or an axe... And you would be well on your way.

Not as common, but it's been done.  It's actually very easy, assuming you have an embark square or two of vegetation and water.  Build a farm plot to grow the seeds you'll get from eating local plants and you're golden.  Break the wagon for the trade depot.  I seem to recall this whole idea just being too easy...slow, mind you...but easy.  I'll consider it again once DF stabilises.  I'm not running a challenge when my biggest challenge is keeping DF from crashing.

Starting with an anvil and copper and then immediately burrowing to the first cavern is a more difficult challenge IMO. Cavern creatures can be nasty.

I'm doing it right now, but I also brought a trained axeman and some cassiterite.

Hi!

Just to add to the easiness factor - I think I recall someone saying that a woodcutter used a wooden training axe to cut trees. If that actually works, then the challenge really becomes extremely easy, given the wood you get from the wagon ...

But I have not confirmed that possibility myself, so I may be wrong on that one.

Oh that's right.  I completely forgot about that bug.  I'd agree with the dig to the underground with nothing idea...but I'm not sure how well you can survive with that many things trying to kill you.  Makes me want to try it!

I'd suggest trying to hit some lignite/coal on the way down. Feed it to your metalsmith to make an axe and (hopefully) a suit of armor before you breach the caves.

Depends where you embark. Wildlife can differ from tasty mustox to zombified carp. Since the start of the game (A whole 2 embarks, counting my current one), I've--unintentionally--embarked with the biggest threat being Rhesus macaque. Of course, if you could find a middle-ground area with some threats, this challenge would actually be kinda fun.

And then it's pretty much a normal fortress from then on.
I find the idea of a normal fortress amusing.

Play the game a bit longer and you'll learn how to stop most things that aren't HFS from doing significant damage.  More than a few people have embarked on top of megabeasts and rushed it immediately.  They usually only lose one or two of the seven.  Mine you none of these guys have military training and probably little to no equipment.

Anything short of a zombie whale or HFS has no real shot at doing major damage once you learn to handle it.
