If you're playing DF2010, then just dig deeper. You WILL have lots of FUN.

This guy gets it, the problem with the child torture dungeon is that they weren't set on fire first.

If you aren't already, install the newest version. Now gen a world and pick a random location and immediately upon embark, dig a shaft straight down.  This should suffice I think.

I mean above ground also.
The enemys above ground are just standing around it seems.
Btw if a dwarf gets killed in a haunted biome isent he supposed to change into a undead?

What?!  These are dwarves! You are supposed to be digging, not mincing about on the surface like pansy humans or elves!

Its a bit to easy to get like 300 food in the first year by just fishing.
I can easily  build a big castle before a goblin thief comes.

So don't fish. Impose challenges on yourself. See how long you can survive with terrifying biome, no water, only food on embark, and standing on one foot blindfolded!  :P

No such condition exists, but it would be a nice init option.

Wakmaster, this is not a game that is trying to challenge you.  That's your job.  You can challenge yourself as much as you want.

It lets you choose an embark location knowing how nasty the wildlife is likely to be.

It lets you select starting equipment and gear.

It lets you choose how many traps to build, or whether you build them at all.

It lets you choose the size of your military.

It lets you choose how fast and deep you dig.

Make the game harder by making choices which are harder to survive.

I allready tried a freezing haunted biome.
Undead are not affected by traps it seems.
And i get incredible legendary dwarfes for some reason.
I had 6 guys murdered and one guy could last weeks with a broken leg nad broken hands In.
He moved the food store to a safe spot and dig out a nice spot for him when he was wounded.
Then migrants came and he died from infection. In his thoughts he didnt care anymore so he couldnt go insane.
A while later i had some more problems and i ended up with one mortaly wounded soldier that was in a choke hold for a season.
People where starving until i bought some food from a caravan but trough all this i had 1 dwarf insane and one beserk.
Most of them where actualy happy!

new version + sinister area = super fun times, and if thats not enough for you, embark with no skills, one anvil and one piece of copper.

You need two pieces of copper.

Make a wood furnace and a forge out of the copper.

Deconstruct the wagon

Burn wood

Deconstruct wood furnace.

Forge a pick.

Edit: The above is assuming you want the anvil you embarked with to be at all relevant.

For more fun, embark with absolutely nothing!

I've been wondering this too
the above ground creatures seem to be far more sparse, three or four at a time
what can I do to make then come in large packs, without actually going through and turning up their pack numbers individually?

You could rely entirely on your military for defence, but for now I'd personally wait until some of the bugs are worked out. I've a hospital full of soldiers because one or two guys are hogging all the weapons.
