Rename the new noble positions
« on: April 12, 2010, 06:04:58 am »

Perhaps "Chief Medical Human" and "Arsenal Human" sound good to your ears or perhaps you're a fan of giant mecha nomenclature but I still think the positions should be called "Arsenal Manager" Quartermaster and "Chief Medical Practitioner." It just plain sounds better, regardless of the species you're playing as.

If I play as humans I call these nobles "head medic" and "quartermaster". I'll wait and look out for better alternatives than "head medic" because, well, heads won't be all Doc has to fix.

DF Players never truly leave.  They just abandon the fortress for a few years and then reclaim.

Quartermaster sounds good and is common enough to be easily understood.

A pre-1400 term for the medical one would be "archiater", a Latin term derived from the Greek one. Not even the people who use the modern term that is directly derived from it (arts, Arzt) will recognize what it could mean, however.

I believe it's physician. Chief physician.

Chief Surgeon
Chief Surgeon would imply surgery only...

We talking about Surgeon General or Chief Surgeon here?

Physician is a narrow term historically. Medical practitioner covers all specialties and general practice.

Let's just call it "House" and be done with it.  :P

Medical practitioners do need their own house (like the miner's guild, animal handlers guild etc.), now you come to mention it. (ed.: spelling)

"Quartermaster" I'm all in favor of.  "Practitioner" is too modern-sounding.

I'm pretty sure "physician" would be an acceptable "time specific" word for them... I think it was used (in Greek form: physis, derived adjective physikos, meaning "nature" and "natural".) well before the Roman Age.  At least, that's what I gather from a quick search on the subject.  I'm not historian by any measure though.  The only concern on that is that the term doesn't cover surgery.

As an aside, I think simply shortening it to Chief Medic would work as well, since Medic is a fairly generic term and it would only really involve removing the unnecessary identification of race and the two letters, "al" from the end of Medic.  And as someone mentioned before, it is derived from the Latin Medicus.

Has nobody considered a simple "Head Doctor"? Though I change the profession name of mine to Surgeon General. *Shrug*

"Practicioner" makes it sound like we're trying to go for political correctness or something. "'He's not a doctor, he's a medical practicioner!' *Snub*"
