Homicidical horror from caves killed by unarmed doctor.
The doctor had no arms? "Hold still while I remove your gallbladder... with my teeth!"

*Silver bolt* the new javelin. Seriously. I just threw a bolt that pierced child's neck and head at the same time.
Bonus: the child was still alive after that and started to run away from me.

The massive oceanic sea that opened up before me my first time i got into the underground.

Followed by the sea of magma.  *Sniff* "it was SO beutiful!"

Had a Giantess attack my fort in winter,

Her first act? picking up a woodcutter by the neck and throwing her into a tree so hard that she exploded. The giantess then PICKED UP the woodcutters (steel)axe and proceded to chop apart a dwarf squad decked out in bronze armor.

My dwarves weapons were only getting to the giants muscles layer expect for the lucky shot that took off the giantesses left hand. She was finally felled when she walked into my forts "Holy Grail" trap, (fortress entrace chokepoint, 10 well made bronze serrated discs in a weapons trap) turning her in to a giant black knight while she was chewed on by my war dogs.

Other than that had to be one of my swordsdwaves decapitating a goblin with a "larch sword" - which also made me remember that the game tracks kills by weapon now!

So, created fort, dug out stuff, then decided to dig down.

And down.

And down.

Long story cut short: a Jabberer, then a blind cave ogre got into my fort and smashed loads of dorfs up before being taken down.

Then a glass demon got partway up the stairs and refused to die even with its feet removed and pretty much all its organs red.

Still managed to seal the stairway to the depths and attempted to resume "normal" business with half the fort running around babbling from being unhappy for too long. Fun times :D

(Also: has anyone else had a problem with caverns where one cave level is full of water flowing down a chasm to another cave, therefore reducing fps to ridiculously low numbers? There doesn't seem to be any easy way to mess with the flow apart from walling it off, which I had to abandon after said Jabberer incident.)

I got a high master siege operator as an immigrant, who managed to pick off one of the two goblins that fell into an inaccessible pit via catapult.

Cool update on my Jabberer story: he got slain by my chief medical dwarf. Imagine. Homicidical horror from caves killed by unarmed doctor.
You must rename him "Urist McNinja"

** I've also got myself into a very sticky situation by building my trade depot underneath a magma reservoir. Now it's full of molten cheese - dwarven fondue?

Interesting. What are the properties of molten cheese? Can you move it around somehow and does it stick like blood or mud? My ideas include above an elven caravan or on top of other food.
I say it's time for a round of chupaquesos!
I am so doing this.

Someone find me a pig so I can add bacon.

* In a somewhat related incident that involves trying to melt elephants, no-one told me that nickel floodgates and steel mechanisms are now "use-once" in magma. I've got lava streaming down the side of my volcano, perhaps as nature intended, with no way to quench it.

Uh.

Unless something's different, or I don't understand how the game works (entirely possible, as I'm still somewhat 'newish', having only dabbled around in one of the 2D versions and one of the 40d versions (though I did successfully make nice magma-and-water control systems in the 40d)), that shouldn'tve happened. Both nickle and steel should be magma-safe. Anyone have any ideas?

More likely it also had a non-magma-safe mechanism attached to it.
If a door/floodgate has even a single meltable mechanism in it, then it will melt, regardless of which ones are actually in use etc.

I'm going to copy and paste something I wrote for another topic but it still applies to this one.

My epic story of my adventurerer dude is one filled with love, loss, tragidy, violence, long nights alone with other guys strength in the face of adversity and sadness.
This is the story of... Gulgad Strangertimes.
It was a long day for Gulgad, he had just brutally killed 3 elves, a druid and a random human spearmaster who refused to offer him a much needed quest. Gulgad Strangetimes was trecking the wilderness when he came across a DARK FORTRESS (Cue evil music), he quickly investigated to find it was inhabited by humans! Thinking that the humans must be possesed by giants he proceeded to cut and dice every single one of them. The Soldiers, the Women, the Children. He released them all from possesion. He quickly travelled to another DARK FORTRESS across the river when he found out that was inhabited by normal elves EVIL ZOMBIE NAZI ELVES! He bravely slew them all and only was hit by arrows a few times. He ripped them out LIKE A REAL MAN and travelled to a nearby elven city to let those pointy eared bastards know that their pointy eared bastard friends had been possesed and turned into NAZI'S. The elves got angry (Mostly due to the fact he *accidentally* killed the druid with a sword) and attacked, Gulgad slew them all and quickly fled to a nearby human town who, as he soon found out, wanted him dead for killing their spearmaster. He quickly killed most of them and fled only to get ambushed by A NAZI ZOMBIE SMOKEY THE BEAR FROM HELL! Gulgad Strangertimes was not to be dettered, he cut off the bastard paws of that damn fireproof bear and it started to run, Gulgad, slowed down by the plunders of the innocent, chased the bear only to be ambushed by AN EVIL SASQUATCH BIGFOOT WALMART EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH! The Sasquatch and the bear were quickly joined by OMEGA WOLVES and Gulgad couldn't handle it. He tried to run but had the bear latch onto his leg. The Sasquatch took advantage and grabbed him by the loincloth before throwing him into a tree, puncturing his lung and damaging his spleen. He got up and bravely charged the bear and killed it violently, but the damage was done, he was surrounded by an EVIL SASQUATCH BIGFOOT WALMART EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH and OMEGA WOLVES. He killed two of the OMEGA WOLVES but it wasn't  enough, the EVIL SASQUATCH BIGFOOT WALMART EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH grabbed his head and gouged out his left eye before an OMEGA WOLF tore off his leg. With a burst of stength he killed the other two OMEGA WOLVES and beat the EVIL SASQUATCH BIGFOOT WALMART EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH to death with the corpses of the OMEGA WOLVES. Gulgad, without his left eye and his right leg, crawled into a nearby cave for shelter. Too bad it was infested with giant cave spiders.

Another story is that of my first fortress. I was following a tutorial and learning how to do stuff. The tutorial told me to dig down 4 stories, so I did. After digging down one of my miners discovered a magma pool on the second level, I thought I could just ignore it for now and wall it off, so I did. Fast forward 30 real life minutes and I had the other two levels up and running with a massive sleeping/study on the 3rd level and a ton of workshops and a massive storage area on the 4th. Goblins then decieded I was good food and attacked me, knowing I was screwed because I had no warriors I retreated to the 4th level and blocked off the staircase, planning on redoing underground. This plan would have worked out if I hadn't of forgotten about the magma pool channel I dug on the third level and broke through the roof right underneath it causing fun.

I was attacked quite early (12 dwarves) by a forgotten beast with poison blood, the only weapon available being an artifact golden sword (fuck yeah) made only a month or so earlier.  With no military to speak of I drafted the carpenter and told them to attack the thing, and was quite successful since the beast seemed so intent on killing my masons and miners slowly and painfully that it failed to notice its thorax being hacked off.

-several years pass-

The carpenter with the golden sword is now the commander to my army, and has racked up a suspiciously large number of kills compared to her comrades - especially since a gold sword should kind of suck.  I finally notice during an encounter with a giant leopard that the leopard is paralyzed.  Further inspection shows me that the golden sword is covered in "frozen forgotten beast extract" and is paralyzing everything it hits extremely effectively.
