Dwarf Fortress easier after patch?
« on: April 11, 2010, 11:15:17 pm »

Im getting kind of bored here. When I first made my fort in DF2010, I was ready for some seriously tough times. Now Im a hundred dwarves and 3-4 years in and I've gone unattacked. Seriously, no attackers. Normally I'd have gotten some kidnappers at least, but the cage traps at my entrance have only caught a buzzard that flew too close.

So okay, Im not getting goblins. That's cool. I'll just dig to those caverns filled with dangers right?

Is dangers like synonymous with gems or something? That's all my cavern has. Gems. Lots of them. Yeah there are some animals down there but they seem pretty uninterested in killing me. So many gems though, it's been a year and my gem cutters havent cut them all. I havent even mined them all out. So many.

But yeah. a hundred dwarves. No sieges. No megabeasts. No forgotten beasts. Not even any raiders of any kind. Im being driven mad here, Im almost about ready to sell some wood to some elves to get em to attack me.

Well, that's not true. I did get a giant rat. Chased him all around my fort with my wooden training swords, was crazy fun. Did manage to kill a war dog though (OMG!). Oooh boy, that rat.........

It's not a patch, it's a new version.   The game isn't anywhere close to being done, and right now the game isn't particularly balanced at all.

You probably embarked on a location that the goblins cannot reach if you aren't get sieges. The lack of forgotten beasts is just a luck of the draw, I guess.

Anyways, each embark location is guaranteed at least 1 "HFS", so I'd keep on digging. Remember you have 3 caverns to explore plus the aforementioned HFS. You're bound to find something challenging.

Yeah, balance is all over the place.  Mostly though, it seems to range towards the extreme difficulty.
....If course, that is dependent on actually finding things to fight.

The first caverns I found were rather devoid of life, short of a few trogs, which weren't much threat.
But...my military, a full squad of trained dwarves (spear, axe, sword, wrestlers...a lil of each), was soundly thrashed by a group of seven goblins.

Is your fortress just in some out of the way part of the world, away from all known civilizations and such?  Only reason I can think of you've just plain not encountered anything.

Though, I've seen people mention problems with the worldgen killing off all their civilizations, too...so that may be a lil buggy too?  I'm a bit unsure about that part though.

Currently difficulty is all over the place.

1.Goblins bring siege engines again, which is great. 20 trolls showed up to party last siege.
2.Goblins are now normal sized and are much tougher. Dwarves are now effectively crippled in combat, it wasn't uncommon for me to lose 20% of the force every time I fought to injuries and another 30% to infections/bloodloss later on.
3.Megabeasts are broken. They are currently quite weak and are easily killed.
4."Non-organic" megabeasts are currently unkillable barring specialist weaponry. This is a uniform issue, but basically causes entire fortwipes unless you get a lucky string of hits.

Well all civs are present and accounted for. I get my dwarf caravan, my elf caravan, and my human caravan. I know I read about forgotten beasts in my world before I embarked, so they're there.

As for digging to HFS, I want to be challenged, not exactly have "fun." As far as I know, HFS is really only good for fun. I've got lots of suffering I want to do for that to happen.

Dig for regular caves and wait for the Forgotten Beasts to attack. Also, don't forget. For the more challenging things to happen you need at least 80 Dwarves and 10k export wealth, I believe.

In the custom world gen you can also set this to be lower...those are the thresholds of a megabeast attack I believe

If you're not having trouble in the caverns, you must have lucked into a spot with no giant bats, and no trolls, and no other stuff.

I walled off the parts of the caverns leading to map edges, but that didn't stop bats from flying in, and ripping peoples' heads off.  Literally, they will grab my dwarves' heads in their mouths, shake dwarves around by the head, tear the head off, and then go flying away with it.

Thats why you should always check civs list before embarking.
It should show "Goblins - WAR" in the list to have sieges.

Incorrect.  It should show three red dashes by goblins to have the potential for sieges.  They are not always at war, but it will very rapidly escalate into war if those are there.  "WAR" only happens if your civ actively had major skirmishes just before your fort started.

I think its more than three dashes? It may vary a bit with the graphics set, but it'll basically be a red dotted line or a red string of dashes.

Sounds like you're one of the lucky few who found an un-"fun" area. I had my fortress wiped out just a couple of seasons after breeching the first cavern. My military was not prepared for what they let loose. I was overly confident and didn't even wall up the cavern entrance until it was too late. And all of this wasn't even the HFS. This was just regular horrors of the deep and a forgotten beast.

Either your military is uncommonly strong, or you just haven't gotten to the good stuff yet.

At time of this posting, this thread was immediately below one called "Are Goblins harder now?"  :D
