I'm actually pretty sure you can get Pikachu as the partner, just not the normal types. When I was testing the out the game way back when, I had a Pikachu partner myself.

The style has been Totodile partner, cubone leader. It was awesome. I like Totodile leader, cubone partner. And I concur with the Raptor Jesus thingy.

I'm pretty sure i can update right after Zchris and Barbarosa clarify their votes for me, since we can't have Cubone as a partner. Do you guys still want Totodile as our leader?

Then Raptor Jesus will be our partner, and we shall be cubone.  Man was never meant to play as Raptor Jesus, anyway.

Okay I'm done waiting it's been three days lets get the ball rolling.

Am I dreaming this?
I feel a pleasant breeze.
...I hear a voice somewhere...
I wonder who it is?

Cubone: (Wh-where is this...?)

Totodile: You were passed out here.
I'm glad you woke up!
RaptrJesus(Totodile): I'm RaptrJesus.
Glad to meet you! ...So, who might you be? I don't think I've seen your face around here.

RaptrJesus: But any which way I look at you, you're a normal Cubone.

Cubone: (I have turned into a Cubone! ...But why? I don't remember anything...)
I smell a plot-hook. Do you smell a plot-hook?

RaptrJesus: So, what's your name? What do you call yourself?

Aw yeuh, kickin it old-school.

Poll question. Which is the funnier name? RaptrJesus or Urist?

RaptrJesus: Hah? I hear shouting over there...

Butterfree: It's horrible! My caterpie fell into a cavern!
My poor baby! A huge fissure opened in the ground, and my caterpie fell in!
He's too young to crawl out by himself! When i went to get my baby, Pokemon suddenly attacked me!
RaptrJesus: Huh? You were attacked? By other pokemon?
Butterfree: They must be enraged by the fissure... and out of control! That's what i think.
I'm not strong enough to fend off those wild Pokemon...
What will become of my baby? Oh! What am i to do?! Oh dear, oh dear...
RaptrJesus: We can't just do nothing! Let's go help this kid!

That thing in the upper left corner is the map. As you can see we landed right next to the stairs, so we can just head on down or look for what little loot might be up here. Keep in mind once we go down (or up in some cases) to a new floor we can never go back, so it's your choice.
Also something i don't get about the tiny woods. The Butterfree says here Caterpie fell into a cavern when a fissure opened up, but since it's a fissure doesn't she mean chasm? and it's called the tiny woods, so it really isn't either of those. So we're in a chasm mistakenly called a cavern which is actually some woods. Mindfuck.

Also, explore for epic lootz random berries.

Urist is a sillier name. Raptor Jesus is Serious Business.

I vote we look around in the overworld before descending into the stairwell-ridden chasm.
