Goblins are normal sized and the new healthcare system doesn't help the fatality rate one bit.

Goblins have copper armor.

All iron weapons get deflected off copper armor. Axes, swords, spears, whatever, they can't penetrate. I have no idea why. Balance bug maybe? Copper is supposed to be soft.

Solution: get bronze or steel weapons and you should be able to kill off the pesky goblins easily.

Copper is supposed to be soft.

Copper, although not a really strong metal, shares one advantage with steel (which gold and several others do not): work hardening. If you hammer (or deform repeatedly in any way) on a work-hardening metal, it becomes harder and more brittle. You loose this strength by heating (annealing).

So you could make a very hard(and therefore brittle and not great for armor again, but differently) copper armor. Not saying that iron shouldn't still go through it, but there you go.

This discussion is meant to enlarge your understanding of material properties, not prove a conclusive point in any way, shape, or form.

Goblins are more persistant.  Your average kidnapper would give up after being hit by a spinning rock or two, but not these guys.  They'll skip through lines of traps, smashing several bones but not deterred in the slightest.

Certainly armed, trained goblin soldiers vs panicking dwarf civilians is now very realistic, ie total fort death.

I just had a gobbo ambush and subsequent siege on my latest fort, where I'd been concentrating on getting a brewing industry up (having lost my previous fort to beer deprivation).  I locked the doors and just lost a fisherdwarf who was stuck outside.

However, as soon as I unlocked the doors and the dwarves all streamed outside, they re-ambushed, killing tens of dwarves washing by the river.  Reviewing some of the combat logs (favourite new feature, btw!) showed that silver two-handed sword vs unarmoured dwarf equals typically sever, sever, death.

There was also a goblin lasher who seemed to specialise in whipping peoples teeth out of their mouths.  Nasty!

Lessons learned so far:

1) get planting/brewing up immediately so that you can survive sieges.
2) have an indoor water area for washing, to avoid the re-ambush river slaughter
3) find a lignite/coal seam so that you don't need trees to power the metalworks
4) build physical defenses other than just lockable doors

Much much harder than 40d now, and better for it.

In a fat-fingered moment while setting up another military squad I accidentally created a captain of the guard rather than a militia captain.  His squad of near-legendary hammerdwarves equipped with high quality silver hammers then took it upon themselves to dispense justice to all the mandate breakers in the fortress.  It was quite messy.

After trying to wrap my head around the military system for my last three forts, I simply gave up and built flood traps.
Works like a charm.

IIRC, traps should still be very effective, just not blunt traps due to problems with the new materials system.

Things like spike traps or weapon traps packed with discs should still perforate and slice up goblins nicely.

If all else fails, magma. Or splatter traps.

I'm particularly fond of splatter traps. I like the exploding part.

Thanks for the info. In my opinion iron should still be able to penetrate copper in this game :P

I'm at work right now...  :-X   but I had a thought.

If there are silver weapons, can you make silver armor/weapons?  I seem to have an abundance of precious metals (gold/nickel/silver) with a little bit of copper and no iron/etc to be found.  I guess I could sell off some of these extreme stashes of gems I have to afford some weapons/armor from the merchants, but I'm a pack rat and only like to sell crap I don't want. :P

I'm not sure what I'm saving the gems for...

In the middle of a goblin siege that I had at bay with locked doors, a Megabeast arrived. I was all "CRAP! That can break the doors!" and began making plans for an emergency cavein-system, hoping the gobs would stall the Oceanic Titan. Then to my horror, it went after the goblins, who proceeded to kill it with one injured, zero dead. I proceeded to keep the doors locked until the scary people went away :P

Personally I find it difficult (if not impossible) to convince my dwarfs to train, thus i dont even try. When ever a migrant with proficent of nearabout experience with armor and a weapon arives, they immediatly get put into my military. Even though they are always in thier civilan jobs until i need them, they have been able to handle any threat so far.

I train my soldiers now by replacing the hunters with roving bands of (k)ill squads.  They seem to do alright, though they're not gaining in skill levels like they used to when they train.  Occasionally a tiger finds the hole in a suit of steel armor, but otherwise it's just a matter of not letting the Keystone Kops aspect of it annoy you.

My last fort of 82 fell to a squad of about 15 goblin hammermen due to my military refusing to go were I told them to and ignoring my orders. When they decided to move it was too late, but my militia commander killed 7 by himself.

Dwarves train and raise skills - at least melee soldiers. It's bugged, sure, but their skills raise, and that's the point. At least in my fortress.

Just had another ambush, this time three goblin squads, with human as leaders. One of them was a priest. I killed most of them and my dwarves just got minor wounds.

The Health Care system is great, between. If your dwarves don't need surgery, bugged for now, you are fine.
