Acanthus, we will have to manufacture weapons, and digging implements. Why don't I have four of my engineers make picks and swords from that plate metal? Meanwhile, I'll go out and search for soil samples, ores, rivers, etc. You can have your researchers work on whatever project you want; I'd like some analysation of whatever I find, but I'll leave you to it.

Swords? We are not savages, captain! I will have my men manufacture proper armaments. I've been working on a little project, and If it works, our lives will be easier.

Have my researchers create pulse rifles, and personally oversee the testing of that drone I made earlier, unless I don't have it.

Acanthus, my dear sir! How can we make pulse rifles out of mere plate metal? Perhaps my engineers can gather some sort of native power source... in any case, do you recommend the production of picks, then? Or shall we make farms?[/b]

Making pickaxes is a piece of cake for your skilled engineers, and in no time every crew member has one. Shovels are even easier, and your engineers think you might need them. When the evening comes, you are well prepared for an excavation.

Swords, however, take a bit more skill, and the engineers are a bit confused as their superiors give them different orders. They get to work however, and from the research lab they tweak some battery packs so they can be loaded at the standard power outlet. So much for the gun energy problem. And even though sheet metal is hard to sharpen, they make a few one-size-fits-all ducktape bayonets. Don't expect them to pierce wood though.

Pulse rifles, on the other hand, seem relatively easy to make - a bit of wiring and some pieces of metal did the trick. The rifle has a slow fire rate and doesn't pierce anything, and it has to be reloaded often, but the electric blast it delivers is enough to get an elephant all stunned and spasmic.

The results of the captains' exploration efforts are meager. A few soil samples, which will need some research, and a path to the buildings.

The research director brought a wheeled drone with him, and initial tests show that the almost airtight hull prevents all sand damage, even the wheels don't seem to gather dirt. A pity the camera is so low, a tiny bit of wind can obscure the whole view.

You got a message from the Spectre:
"Sir, tell your troops to put their rifles on low-energy stun. We have no idea why those workers started to rebel, and we would like to interrogate as much of them as possible."

Obviously flying drones are way too hard for what they're worth, so you decide to go with remote controlled cars. However, all prototypes suffer from the same design flaw: they aren't sand-proof, and the engineers have to take them back inside before they get damaged. They will work on a decent sandproof chssis tomorrow.

The captain, currently in geostationary orbit, would give a lot for a manual. These scanners are 'made on mercury', and they look as cheap as they are, with dozens of bugs and an interface more puzzling than a game of Zork. By the time the captain figured out how to get them to work for longer than a few seconds, there is no more time for decent scans.

Your soldiers are trained, and it pays off. Not only did they provide you with highly-detailed maps of the environment of two rebel outposts, none of their scouts noticed anything.

Your tactics are a bit rusty however, and you try to remember the days back on earth where a fully interactive holo-simulator took you to a beginning dwarven outpost... Despite a few oddities in your plan ('We have to build drawbridges!') the tactics will provide you with an advantage over your unsuspecting enemy.

On the ground station, have 4 engineers plan out a magma-powered industrial sector. Considering this is a volcanic planet and the magma here is supposedly a HELL of a lot hotter than Earths, it'd work, I think. So yeah, make em design something like that.
We've arrived on this hellhole. Barren and steaming, it'll fry ya skin in five-tenths of a second, it will. My first priorities are survival, and after we get a farming system up I'll speak with me friend, Inteuniso about finding and exploiting whatever water deposits there are on this planet.. Though admittedly, there's probably very, very few.

Inteuniso pondered his current situation. Unable to know what is deeper than 5 feet, he decided to sink a shaft and find out.

Have 4 miners dig a shaft 50 feet deep.

A magma-powered work station is perfectly possible. In theory, that is. Your engineers come up with a workable, albeit somewhat dangerous design, but they don't seem to find any magma.

((What made you think the planet is more volcanic than earth?))

A 50 feet shaft is a walk in the park for miners such as yours. Under the sand layer, you find clay, and the bottom of the shaft is a little moist - though luckily, no water is coming in. The shaft is reinforced in the sand layer, using the clay that was dug away.

The shuttle has arrived! You can buy all basics and order other stuff.

Could we get a list of raw material and personnel costs?

Raw material is no problem, I will give that next turn, anything you need to know now? What do you mean by personnel cost? They only cost food. Yes, now that you mention it, I only changed that with one of you. Everyone has 590 food.

Can we hire more people? A single squad of 4-5 soldiers won't be very interesting for long, especially after we start taking casualties.

How much would powerful guns be? Digging machines?

Order some kind of flying aircraft-ish thingy, with a obsidian or magma-proof metal/rock storage bay for transporting large quantities of magma
Send all engineers out in the new aircraft to scout for volcanoes.
Persuade the shuttle pilot by offering him a beer and getting him drunk enough to weasel as much information out of him as possible.

More like Mars, really. But x2 has a point. It is very volcanic-hinting, and the huge amount of CO2 leads us on.

Order some lights that can be put in the shaft.
Have 2 miners set up a sensor at the bottom of the shaft, and have 2 other miners begin to dig a main area at the bottom of the shaft.
Have 2 engineers develop a mining cart.
Have 2 engineers develop a powered heavy freight elevator.
Buy 10 Electronics, Plate Metal, and Mechanics.
Order 10 units of rubber.

Acanthus, what will your researchers do? And what do you suggest my engineers and I work towards (other than the buildings; I'm wary of entering them without proper weaponry)?
