I must use my workshop well. I must work harder than my enemy, who is trying to kill me. He must have fun before I do. I will make it so. Before Armok I swear this creed: my workshop and myself are defenders of my country, we are the masters of our enemy, we are the saviors of my life. So be it. Amen.

I am glad to report that GCS silk farms do still function, mine just seams really shy.
I have yet to see it shoot webs but after i dealt with some traders that showed up and came back to the silk farm it had shot some webs.

I used to catch GCS and get them to make silk by designating a pit above their layer, then dropping a cat or dog from above.  This makes them frisky, and prone to shoot webs.  No doubt goblins, beastmen from the underground, etc. make good toys for them as well, but tame pets are easy because you can just boot them into the spider pit without setting up any special contraptions.

You could let him out.  My fortress just crumbled to its end, and I guarantee there was plenty of unwoven silk thread left around.

...what about taming it and making it a War Spider or Hunting Spider? You can make war beasts of various sorts now, anyone try with a GCS?

GCS silk isn't worth nearly as much as it used to be anyway.

But there's something so dwarvenly about farming one of the most dangerous natural beasts for one of its byproducts. Especially considering they are so alien they are untameable.

Even if it isn't as profitable as before.

Your Profit-Utilitarianism theories bemuse me.  Don't you know that we have a prima facie duty to do the most dangerous work for the least profit?  As Urist McKant Said, "I must act according to the maxim such that I can will that maxim to destroy everything beloved to me at the flip of a lever."

And when you build your fortress walls from the bones of skeletal elephants, slain my weapons forged from melted goblin plunder, fed on cattle that graze on grass that blinks.  Then, you will know dwarfdom.
