Dresden Files- fan?
« on: April 11, 2010, 03:24:02 pm »

Anybody else read the Dresden Files?

I just started a few days ago, and I'm on book 3. I'm really enjoying it. Though it shares a long standing complaint I have with contemporary magic fantasy novels.

Science ignores/denies magic as does any civil authority. 8/ I'm fine with general public not knowing/denying the paranormal. There are things known to exist but are so rare and novel that the general public doesn't know its possible or no it exist.

Its just that if magic is reliable enough to be used by magician and paranormal is around enough to cause issues on a semiregualr basis, then the scientific method would work. Generally though with scientific understanding comes practical application, and I'm fine with this not being the case with magical talent being rare and being good at it even rarer.

In Dresden Files, there enough paranormal things that Chicago PD has a department for it but the FBI (and probably other civil authority) denies the paranormal. When I could imagine that the FB I would have to deal with a fair bit of it. Why would a paranormal entities care about state borders? I would also be fine the FBI not having magician on permentant retainer. Its too rare.

This generally bugs me.

Outside that common complaint I am very happy with the Dresden Files. I know how spoiler phobic this community is, so its pain in the add to discuss what I really liked without talking about the novels themselves. I have no silly issue with spoilers. So don't worry about ruining something happening in a later book.

A fan?  Why, whatever would give you that impression?

Book 4 is where things really start to get good.  In all honesty the first three are a little clumsy, but still good reads.  And just wait until book seven.  That one is epic.

I'll probably be on book 4 tomorrow. At this pace I should have all 11 novels read by mid may or so.

That was good. The changes made were reasonable for TV. I think the books are better. I do admit that the first novel is kinda of clunky DUMP of plot exposition.

Oh boy does stuff happen in the 10th book.

but, I am pissed off because I can't get all the books. And while they are highly entertaining I can not recall a single thing after reading them, meaning I have to read them again.
And the guy won't stop making the dresden files so I know for sure there will be at least 13 books.

Wanna spoilers?
I'll give you damn spoilers.

The author stated that Dresden Files will end with a apoplectic trilogy. We'll get to see why Hells Bells and Stars Above are curses in them.

I have mixed feelings about the Dresden files. On one hand, I find them to be of average-low quality. On the other, I find them very entertaining and hooking

I never understood that something had to be above average in order to be enjoyed?

You enjoy it. Why can't that be enough?

It is, actually. That's my point. I get soap-opera enjoyment out of the saga

I've got the first book lying around somewhere. I got a chapter into it, but then abandoned. Not sure why.

Maybe I'll pick it up after I'm done with "A kiss before Apocalypse."

It's about a willingly fallen angel who is a PI. Kinda poorly written, but still fun.

I just finished Book 3, on book 4. You don't fuck with Dresden. Though the whole -redacted- war and calling every last meal the -redacted- had was bad ass. Also Fairy Queens are scary.

Yes he does. He rapes a vampire later on. It was sort of consensual, though.
