Anybody else read the Dresden Files?
I just started a few days ago, and I'm on book 3. I'm really enjoying it. Though it shares a long standing complaint I have with contemporary magic fantasy novels.
Science ignores/denies magic as does any civil authority. 8/ I'm fine with general public not knowing/denying the paranormal. There are things known to exist but are so rare and novel that the general public doesn't know its possible or no it exist.
Its just that if magic is reliable enough to be used by magician and paranormal is around enough to cause issues on a semiregualr basis, then the scientific method would work. Generally though with scientific understanding comes practical application, and I'm fine with this not being the case with magical talent being rare and being good at it even rarer.
In Dresden Files, there enough paranormal things that Chicago PD has a department for it but the FBI (and probably other civil authority) denies the paranormal. When I could imagine that the FB I would have to deal with a fair bit of it. Why would a paranormal entities care about state borders? I would also be fine the FBI not having magician on permentant retainer. Its too rare.
This generally bugs me.
Outside that common complaint I am very happy with the Dresden Files. I know how spoiler phobic this community is, so its pain in the add to discuss what I really liked without talking about the novels themselves. I have no silly issue with spoilers. So don't worry about ruining something happening in a later book.
