more military retardation
« on: April 11, 2010, 02:26:55 pm »

All right.  This new military and medical system is just silly.

I just had an axedwarf bedridden for a brown wound on his right lower arm.  In the middle of a diagnosis from the doctor, he suddenly decided it was time to spar with a training partner.  He jumped out of bed and ran to the nearby barracks.  within 5 seconds, his right lower arm flew off in a bloody arc.

he was dragged again to the hospital bed.  however, he didn't even let his head hit the pillow before he was back up, grabbing another axe to replace the one he just lost (you know, the one that was in his right hand that was just cut off) and continuing his training session with his sparring partner.

holding an axe and a shield both in his left hand, he managed to cut his sparring partner's leg off at the hip.  both bodyparts are lying in a pile in the barracks.

both of them are now in the hospital.  the whole scene took about 20 seconds to play out.

No.  The squad he was in was on active duty, stationed outside of the fortress.

Thankfully I've never got anyone in my military to spar yet.  ::)

I'm gonna say that it's not the system's fault, but yours.  Sparring with real sharp axes is just a bad idea if you're not competent enough a dodger to...  dodge.

How do you get your military to change to training weapons when they aren't on active duty?
Is that part of the uniforms tab?

I'm gonna say that you didn't read.  The squad he was in was on active duty with a station order.  He was in the hospital and went to train when he was supposed to be standing guard (or sitting in the hospital receiving medical care).  Not only that, but sparring incidents aside, the interaction between the military and hospitals is clearly messed up.  He got out of his bed in the middle of a diagnosis, lost his arm, got put back in the hospital, and got back out of his bed once again.

Anyway, there's a little update.  The guy whose leg he cut off wasn't receiving medical treatment, so I locked him into his room and let him starve to death (pretty much anyone with a red injury is screwed nowadays... none of the medical professions are working properly except for suturing, cleaning, and dressing it seems).

The axedwarf missing an arm stood in the barracks for a few months with the order "sparring," except he wasn't sparring with anyone or anything.  After a while, he went back to normal military duty, except he's missing an arm.  He can hold an axe and a shield in one hand, but for roleplaying purposes I removed his shield.  Anyway he's kind of a badass now.  He's got a page of named goblin kills and has a semi-cool title "The Renowned Power."  So I promoted him to militia commander.

This is why even in the buggier versions like this I tend to just run with stuff if it's not game breaking (i.e. doesn't crash the game or grind the fort to a complete standstill).

The wonkiness sometimes plays out in really fun ways.

What's more awesome than a dwarf getting his arm chopped off in training, then in the middle of receiving treatment decides he wants revenge, so stomps out of the hospital trailing bandages and blood, grabs an axe, finds the asshole who 'accidentally' chopped off his arm, and relieves him of his leg.

Now, several months later, he is still in active service, and has just been promoted, while the buffoon who cost him his arm is long dead after mysteriously disappearing several weeks ago.

This... does not seem to be the case. While I've never seen them make casts or even hand out splints or crutches, I had one of my legendary miners get sutures in a red wound. He was set to request immobilization and stuff. He had a red leg, arm, and hand, I believe... after a while I saw that he was up and about again. A few seasons later, I looked at him again and all that was left was a yellow hand injury.
Sutures seem to be sufficient, I guess. I think his health log said he had some of his bones set too, but I guess it was done without the aid of a splint or cast (unless those simply don't show in his inventory)...
About the same with my soldiers that run through too.

As a workAaround, you can designate a burrow on the hospital and restrict the injured to it.
It's a bit micromanagey, but should prevent them from running off when they come to.

Haven't had any casts(or tractions) yet, but all the other operations seem to work when the doc is not interrupted or the patient runs off.

I was also wondering about training weapons.
Tried having dorfs carry metal and wooden weapons both, but then they choose to use the training eq for fighting as well.
with the schedule, it seems silly to redefine the uniform each time they train. Besides, re-equiping is pretty difficult anyhow. (but my experience is bugged due to missing nobles here)

I guess the way it is supposed to work is: dorf has copper axe, goes to training barracks, looks for training axe, carries one over from stockpile and stows his axe in the Q enabled barracks/armoury of the squad, spars, then swaps back to metal axe after training. both axes remain property of axedorf while stored at eQ-barracks/private room.

Hahaha, 20 minutes after I read this, my Hammerdwarf got his lower left arm cut by my Axedwarf.
He was "pale" for almost a month, and now he lives a happy life randomly crushing the hands, arms or legs of their fellow soldiers.

We need training hammers!
What's weaker than Copper? I need to give him the weakest hammer for training..

Silver is the weakest metal, I believe.

So there's that, as well. It looks like the only chronic problems that water can't cure are nausea and cave spider bites.
Which, coincidentally enough, can be cured by magma.
