Every invincible boss monster needs a weak point.
« on: April 11, 2010, 10:35:14 am »

I've set out to mod Bronze Colossi into having a vital organ (A brain called the "Core" in the upper body), but now instead of punching and wrestling, they... roll around on the ground and push you.

How can I incorporate a vulnerable spot into these beasts without making them act all... erm... braindead?

Yes. Clearly a bug that ought to be fixed in the future, but exploit it in the meantime.

I just added BRAIN called SOULGEM to them, and it works nicely.

Right...

I added
[BODY:CORE]
   [BP:BRAIN:brain:STP][CONTYPE:UPPERBODY][THOUGHT][INTERNAL][SMALL][CATEGORY:BRAIN]
      [DEFAULT_RELSIZE:200]

Added CORE to the body list, removed [NOTHOUGHT] and [NO_THOUGHT_CENTER_FOR_MOVEMENT].

I'm pretty sure stuff needs a nervous system to use a brain.

No, my colossi work fine without it. You're pretty wrong :).

Try putting [NO_THOUGHT_CENTER_FOR_MOVEMENT] back on.

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

I thought maybe it was the lack of tendons/nerves but that doesn't seem likely upon reflection. Does the core have its own material, or did you just use bronze?

Okay.

Um, I'm kinda new at this whole modding thing, I sort of assumed it would be bronze like everything else. If I could make it its own material, I'd make it some sort of gemstone, possibly a star ruby.

aren't bronze effected by melting?
so they aren't invincible more so your trying to take on a metal type with a high phy defense with phy attacks you need to hit them with magic or elemental based attacks like freezing them in ice or dumping magma to really get them.

I'm sorry, but that may be the most pointless post I've ever read.

Let me know how that works out in adventure mode. You do realize magic doesn't exist yet, right?

I read rumrusher's post and was reminded of castlevania.

Sadly, castlevania isn't dwarf fortress, and the only methods available are melting, decapitation (not even sure if that works all of the time) and crushing via cave-in.  Dwarven atom smashed BRIDGE ver. probably deconstructs.

The original poster of the topic wants to mod in methods to defeat specific enemies in combat legitimately.

The problem I see with this is adding in something that either takes a long time for a dwarf to hit (dorfs!), or a dwarf aims for it first and just absolutely instantly wrecks the thing in a first hit.  Titans, megabeasts, etc, shouldn't be like that.  You should make sure to take steps against that; I'm sure it's possible with Toady's new body parts and combat system.

While I'm not sure if the system works for this specific example, but adding in a body part(s) that needs to be hacked off or destroyed (mangled) before exposing the weak point would be GREAT.  I'm not sure exactly how to go about doing it, and I'm not even sure it's possible (I believe it might be though).  At the very least, it's worth looking into for future modders if it's not known yet.

As is, the bronze collosus is the terminator from T2. Nothing short of a magma bath will kill it. Not sure about why yours turned into a worm when you gave it a brain, though.

With Hydra functioning more-or-less properly now, could you give the creature a number of distributed [THOUGHT] weak points that all must be destroyed before it dies?
