Vermin Infestation
« on: April 11, 2010, 10:06:34 am »

I have a fortress in a marsh, and everything was going OK until an army of vermin showed up.
They started eating away at my food.
I trapped most of them.
They keep coming.
I'm thinking of selling the vermin to the dwarves or something.
Might as well have vermin as a commodity.

When there's a vermisplosion, apply Cat.
When there's a catsplotion, apply magma.
 ;D
(And those trappers finally have a job this time it seems:P)

Hopefully, the next migrant wave will have a cat with it.

You're not a dwarf unless you embark with 5 cats of each gender.
And survive the catsplosion.

The fortress I started yesterday had small "clouds" floating around yesterday... k'ing them showed them as "a mass of fluffed wamblers" or something like that. One of my cats started hunting them, killing them.... and instantly there was a 5x5 square of fluffy wambler remains. This is one way you can fill up your refuse stockpiles quickly :/

My refuse stockpiles aren't full because of that...they're full because there's so much vermin...and a wide variety to boot.  I have one cat that came with an immigrant wave and I have twice as many vermin remains around the fortress than in the refuse stockpiles because I can't make a refuse stockpile big enough to take it all.

When there's a catsplotion, apply magma.

When there's a magmasplosion, you're playing the game right.

And when you build your fortress walls from the bones of skeletal elephants, slain my weapons forged from melted goblin plunder, fed on cattle that graze on grass that blinks.  Then, you will know dwarfdom.

build the refuse pile outside, when that fails build them indoors, when that fails mod all you dwarves into verminhunters and watch as your fort dies from infections and miasma

Well, I've successfully performed two of three steps.  I'll do the third whenever I get my custom reactions to work.  No better way to kill a fortress.

Hi!

Since some people here don't seem to realize: In 31.0x, a lot of vermin remains will never rot, no matter what you do. Thus, you will need to "dump" them somewhere (preferably a muddy pool freezing over during winter as it will destroy the remains in the process) to free your stockpiles so that the rotting remains will not poison your fortress.

You COULD make a dwarven trash compactor: A drawbridge connected to a lever. Designate a garbage zone under the bridge, and pull the lever every once in a while. No more vermin.

I don't think losing guts actually kills you, you just throw up and pass out and bleed to death.
