Miners Guild on strike?
« on: April 11, 2010, 08:19:44 am »

On my most recent fort (recent as in playing as I type) I seem to have run into a problem.

Knowing, that I prefer to dig out huge amount of fortress area before starting to settle underground I brought three miners which all started to dig their way into their new home. A huge part of the fortress is already dug out... But now they refuse to dig any more... all designated areas remain untouched.

I tried to redesignate the areas... no success, I tried to reenable the mining labor... no success... HOWEVER... I tried to designate another area for digging, which they quickly dug out. What did I miss?

edit:
Well, apparently saving and loading did help. But still, an unusual thing to happen...

Edit edit:
They dug a layer or two and stopped again...

I think its a pathfinding bug. Have you dug any channels?
Try locking and unlocking a door that usually gets the dorfs moving again.

Hm, I don'T even have any doors... Well, I do have a rather wild underground with ups and downs... But as soon as I save and reload they do dig a little... they shear exactly one layer of what I have designated, then stop again.

Absolutely a pathing bug. Saving and reloading fixes it, but the faster way is snooptodd's door suggestion. Just build one somewhere random and useless, and lock/unlock it every now and then.

Better yet, hook it to a repeater.

I can't even build the door anywhere except right beside the workshop. it instantly says "no access to door"

maybe i should just start a new region / fortress

You'll have to save/reload first, then. Fortunately, once an area's been accessible to dwarves for a long enough time, the pathfinding issues seem to go away (or at least lessen in frequency).

I've had that mining issue before, pretty much means the area needs to be designated one layer at a time.  It doesn't always happen though.  I don't know weather it's related to the pathfinding bugs that are rampant in this version or something else entirely.

What it means is you need to get rid of those ramps.
