Melee with giants
« on: April 11, 2010, 02:00:55 am »

After some frustration with fortress mode bugs, I started playing adventure mode. I'm used to annoying deaths from playing roguelikes, but this is ridiculous.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Once a giant grabs an adventurer, there is little chance of escape and even less chance of getting a lucky shot in before being torn apart.

It seems like the most effective strategy is to take along a couple recruits to get strangled while you hack the enemy to pieces, but that is a little unsatisfying to me.

Any suggestions?

You can't be stronger than a giant, but you can be faster. Try training dodge skill. And projectiles are still a way to go.

Well,if we want to be logical here, the giant is stronger than you,and tougher.he obviously doesn't care much about your axe.there is no concrete reason you should be able to kill it,as by the numbers, the giant is superior to you.
But,bringing along some recruits as distraction, training in dodge, and having a bit of luck should even the odds next time.

Actually, there is one way of defending yourself against that particular death...

Lie down.

The "throw" and "take-down" attacks only work if the character being tossed is standing.  If you lie down when you suspect they'll throw you, they'll be forced to take another action.  The only other insta-death wrestling move they can pull on you is pinching, which I have never, ever seen the AI perform.

You still have to watch out for locked joints and strangulation though.  Also, the take-down and throw moves have top priority in the wrestling list, so don't stand back up if they still have a grasp on you.

Yeah, I applaud that the monsters are actually hard, now. It didnt make sense how easy they were to kill in the older version. Giants are...heh...Giant. They should be able to crush a human or dwarf easily, like a human could crush a dog or something.
...weird example, but you get it.

.....I dont follow. A moving wagon would be, yes, which is why people in ye olden times were often crushed by them in the cities. But they aren't, ya know, alive. So they really dont play much part in this conversation.

On the contrary, wagons actually are alive as far as DF is concerned, and getting in their way is not a good idea.

There has never, ever been a time when a kobold getting run over and killed by multiple wagons didn't make me burst out laughing.

As for the giants, I use the 'poke and move' maneuver. I first set my combat defense to "dodge" so I am guaranteed to try and dodge, then run up to cut them a few times. When they're bleeding I back away and let them get weaker, then run up to do it a few more times.

The only real problem is if they do manage to land a grab on you it's nearly impossible to break free because size makes a huge damn difference in pure combat power now.

He's just yanking your chain, all that stuff was there when the adventurer got there.  Stuff the giant has been pilfering over the past couple decades.

As for the actual combat, I actually like it this way.  I've always been a bit peeved by how giant creatures are treated on the same level as every yahoo adventurer who comes around to smack 'em.  Now it really is dangerous to tussle with the big boys, and so you have to treat them with a decent amount of caution.

...but, like I said, there's a way of avoiding the throw-death.  If a giant nabs you, just lie down.  It's dangerous, but it's better than instant death.
