My guess is he's a decent guy who's just absolutely TERRIBLE with children (I've met the type before). I really hope he listens to his friend, takes some good advice, and straightens up his act a bit...

My guess is he's a guy who's absolutely terrible with anybody except his best friend(s?).
And I'm pretty sure his behaviour towards Antimony isn't parental incompetence in the main. It's not going to be fixed by telling him what he did wrong... He certainly has a plan there, or at least a strategy. It may be a very dumb plan though: it probably doesn't account for her splitting her soul, just for example.
