Sure, people change. But do body-stealing demons change?
Probably.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

Oh, Kat's dad is being very forthright with his questions. Maybe we'll get answers? I'm hoping so.

Did a guidebook for small-talk advise old Tony to compliment his hosts' kids? Or did he just use the opportunity to keep talking about his job and only his job?

I took a close look at Donald's body language in the previous page: Back squarely turned at Carver, basically excluding him from the group, watching him without facing him, fist in his pocket. He's pissed, and not bothering to hide it. If he weren't abrasive now, I'd assume ulterior motives.

I am constantly getting more convinced that he's just some sort of automaton like Armitage in Neuromancer.

I get the feeling that's the image he wants to project. Not "is an automaton" but "is completely logical and emotionless."

WHA???

So...guesses? I'm gonna go with "Mental shock caused Annie to literally develop a split personality, separating her human and elemental halves."

Which would explain the passivity. All of her feistiness is in the fire elemental half.
