I, uh, forgot where I was for a moment and totally read this as the latest post in some Politics Megathread (or maybe Armchair General). You had me in some magical world of terrifying military technology for a while - probably North Korea's or somesuch. I don't think I'd have realized at all if I hadn't seen 'lindsey' there.

I have to wonder, why the strange cockroach-like form, though? Also, given that they've been shown to be more fond of functional designs over artistic ones (When Diego's golem thing talked with Robot), why is Kat's etheric form covered in so many details and evidently non-functional bits?

For some reason, I have to wonder if the bug psychopomp whose name I can't remember might be involved? Maybe seeing him did something to Kat on the etheric level?

I suspect it's something of an appreciation for that which they do not have.  Diego's past robot/golems appreciated the present-day robots because they were the culmination of the original robots' goals to create something simple enough that could self-reproduce, as they themselves could not.  However, to the present-day robots, the very complexity of the Diego-bots was a huge signifier that they were only one step removed from the original Creator himself while they themselves were many generations lost to that connection.  The present-day robots cannot create anything as complex as the Diego-bots, so anything as functional in outward form as they themselves are is fundamentally tied to their own limited abilities, while complexity in the fashion of the Diego-bots is limited only to the purview of the Creator's works (or, with Kat's general acceptance as such, Creators').

Yeah, it makes sense for the god (maybe more like prophet, with Diego being the god?) of the robots to be much more like their ancestors, since those were closest to the original creator.
