I think this is perfectly in character for Coyote. He's the Trickster God. He'll lie, cheat and scheme, not even to further some grand goal, but just for giggles. Which isn't to say that he doesn't have some grand goal. Perhaps this whole tooth thing is just to lull Annie into a false sense of insecurity so that she doesn't notice the REAL plot.

Also, he only forbade telling anyone in the forest. If she ever visits the court, she can tell everyone. Oh, and Coyote didn't expressly forbid her from telling, only warned that she would lose her hand. And smugly telling him that might just be worth a limb. And he might be bluffing, anyway.

Coyote doesn't lie.

This doesn't really make him any safer to trust, to be honest.

Yes, he's perfectly serious about his threat. No lies here!

Why get a hook hand? Get a Coyote's Tooth hand.

Also, he did not say what would happen when/if her hand comes off, what else it does, or anything like that. For all we know, this could be a test of some kind.

Game. It's a game. Coyote's playing. Because Coyote is deadly serious when Coyote is playing.

Toady typically doesn't do things by half measures.  As evidenced by turning "make hauling work better" into "implement mine carts with physics".
There are many issues with this statement.

Did anyone else crack up laughing at today's comic?  Coyote is so hilarious sometimes.

..."Beyond 'Kno-gak'"? ???
He was going to say "beyond knowledge" but was interrupted by Annie suddenly hugging his chin.

I see it now. It's even "Kno~gak", with a tilde, when I look closely.
Bad formatting though, Tom. It could easily have been made clearer.

So

There's a really cool book I found.

It's called Giving Birth to Thunder, Sleeping with His Daughter: Coyote Builds North America, by Barry Holstun Lopez.

It's a collection of Coyote short stories.

I'm sure there are many others but this one is really good. Especially for Gunnerkrigg fans, haha.
