To sever ties with the woods and Ysengrin. It was explained in a later strip.

I though the cherries were drugged or something too. And I get your point Jackrabbit, it just would have been better if it wasn't so sudden and jarring (possibly at a better moment too. Makes you wonder why that tree was locked up in the first place).
It was explained in a later chapter. Its a decontamination room of sorts for enchanted trees that come from the forest. You might be able to connect that to the cherries being more powerful, but I think that the scene is okay as it is.

I know about the decontamination room bit, but I wondered what powers that tree in particular has. Powers of "OhmygodIhavetoconfessmydeepestsecretstoyourightnow"?

And wasn't the court sever bit only for the hand tree?

Ah, the cherry tree scene, it was a what-the-hell moment.

Waterworks came out of nowhere for all I knew.

Nope, it was for any plant life sourced from the forest.

Yeah, you'd assume it was because of the mother, but then later you find out it's much, much more.

I think it had something to do with being a medium, no idea why.

Living in a hospital for much of your life would have its own issues.

Oh.
But I still don't understand why she was suddenly crying at that exact moment. It was pretty unexpected.

I don't think she had set a date and time for her repressed emotions to overwhelm her. These things happen, and happen astonishingly abruptly.

It was the intention of the author that it be abrupt, basically.

I feel fairly confident in this assumption. Also Jones is a time-traveler from the early 18th century with mutant superpowers. That is another assumption I feel reasonably confident with.
