I didn't get the impression that Mort saw it the same way Kat does, he was just as baffled when she pointed out the giant creepy monster/crummy costume guy in the corner, when the stagehands pushed out the vcr, she popped the tape and all that.

It's been heavily implied that Kat is in some way just as special to robots as Annie is to the Ether. Considering robots seem to have no Ether presence, and everything we've seen, it's very likely that Kat is very, very heavily grounded in the... Materium? I don't think the "real" world is ever given an explicit name which excludes the Ether.

The way I see it:  Like how the game Final Fantasy Tactics had it... 'Faith', the stat determines how much of an effect Magic (or this case, Ether) has an effect upon an individual.
Anne and Morty have high Faith.  Kat has low Faith. 
They see the same thing, but have vastly different perspectives of it.

Well, but Kat is clearly very powerful in the ether, so I don't know if it's that.

She does look terrifying and I reckon its more a form of symbolism showing that she is... 'different', out of this world in the perspective of the Ether.  A giant rusty ol thing to the vibrant ether.
Rather, her power in the Ether is the ability to use tools... ?

It doesn't seem unreasonable that Kat is such a huge, warping presence in the Ether because of her connection to the material world. Whereas Annie is very "light" and can move in the Ether with ease, Kat is so "heavy" that she distorts the Ether?
