Giant Scorpions needs to be trainable Then able to be used as mounts. Because riding a giant scorpion into battle is extremely dwarvish.

what is the most effective war animal now?
dogs suck big time even against wrestlers

Riding giant cats sounds awfully ... elven  :P
But they're giant cats that'll bite your arm off just for looking at them funny. That's not so elven :P

Well, given the attitude of DF elves during world gen, that's not that unelvish.
Anyhow, I was satisfied with the proper working of the battle reports when I read the report how my tame tiger spontaneously bit off the head of a wild goat way outside my fortress in 31.01. However, my current elves don't bring me giant cats at the moment, but lots of bears. And vultures and buzzards. I hope vultures can be adopted when I get my dungeon master - my manager likes them because of their patience...

But vultures and buzzards seem to be quite harmless - their attacks on a kobold thief failed miserably. On the other hand, a tame cougar is now named, so I guess she was able to swipe the kobold kill (a lot of different people including merchant archers tried to kill that kobold, with no obviously fatal blow).

Since I currently only have thieves, my bears have yet to get a real chance for combat - the thieves run away far too quickly for my bears to catch (T_T)

Riding Jaguars are perfectly dwarfy.  More specifically, they're Aztec-y, and we all know that the Aztecs were very, very dwarfy.  Make sure your dwarves wear jaguar leather armor and use obsidian short swords!

Put cage traps on places outside where it may roam and wait, I suppose. At least in my early 3D fortresses, I had giant eagles that got themselves killed in the weapon traps defending my fortress.

There seems to be an increased curiosity of wild animals - at least people are reporting more deers in their fortresses, so placing some cage traps there may actually help.

But I don't know of a quick way to catch it.

Traps on mountain peaks or make a building with corridors and roofs that has an animal staked in the middle. Put traps between the outside and your bait.

My war dogs never seem to land a blow on the kobold thieves that wander in and the only one that managed to latched on, got stabbed in the leg, let go and was in intense pain and such. The kobold ended up doing the entrance dance for a bit with my dwarves that were trying to reload traps then managed to get in and slew the dog with another stab to the leg. Entrance danced a bit more then finally ran off.

Alright a few friends have confirmed the trainables, and it appears that a dungeon master is needed to train exotic pets. Which is interesting. Perhaps it is a bug, perhaps not.

Ugh, yeah, a deer snuck it's way into my fort and it was annoying all my dwarves in the meeting area. My military wasn't trained enough to catch it on foot. D: It eventually went into a dead end room and I built a cage trap at the only available exit. Now I remember to built traps for my entrance.

On a more on-topic note, has anyone actually reported getting a Dungeon Master in the new version yet?

Actually, if I remember correctly, that is not a bug. Not at all. Once you get a dungeon master, you can train animals that are exotic.

The saddest part about trainable animals is they are currently useless.

I had a goblin thief (not even a master thief) vs two war giant tigers - he stabbed the eye out of one and it bled to death, then escaped. I checked the combat log - they could not even bite/claw through his leather cloak. I've had 5+ war dogs chasing the same goblin, they were not able to hurt it faster then it healed. war elephants have been mentioned above as being similarly weak

You might as well chain up kittens for all the good it does.

They do make good bait, though. I keep an elephant or two chained up in my entrance hall. If something really nasty comes along it will stop and fight them instead of rushing headlong into the fortress. And if it's REALLY nasty, like the iron monstrosity that came recently, I flip a lever and encase the whole hallway in obsidian.
